    Default Any Rhykenologists out there?

Did anyone else see 'Collectors' on ABC TV tonight at 6.30? They showed some interesting netsuke carvings, also a bloke who collects planes (a rhykenologist, they informed us). Some of his collection were interestin & quite old.

Also, their 'What is is?' was a wooden thread-cutting die.

I was shouting at the tv "it's an 1890's wooden thread cutting die!" but they ignored me, sigh.

    Me too.
Mind you, I had shiver go down the spine when it was 1890's. I had no idea really of the timeframe, just that it was pretty old.
    Boring signature time again!

The rhykenologist they featured was Trevor Semmens who has written an interesting book titled "Australian Woodworking Planmakers". Think he has released an updated version of the book just lately.

Thought Trevor was worth a bit more time than the short segment that was devoted to him.

    Default Tasmanian Rhykenologist

Another Tassie lad and a past president of the Woodcraft Guild of Tasmania, Trevor is still a member of the Guild and is continuing to add to his collection.

Bear in mind that a Rhykenologist is a collector - not to confused with those of the dark side who are avid users.

    regards

I am fairly sure I saw that exact item at an old tools show in Hawthorn here in Melbourne earlier this year. I discussed it with the seller and was surprised it was so old, I was thinking 1930 or so.
