Well got my 392, drill press and dust extractor this morning and have spent the last few hours setting them up.
Drill Press and dust extractor where pretty easy, the manual were pretty good, but at the same time they are not complicated machines...
Have to say the manual for th 392 is pretty poor, but I know that is not news to anyone. The scary thing is there was a little screw sitting on the bottom of the packing crate, which I have no idea of where it is from...
Anyway, put it all together and thought Id just try a bit of wood. Came out with funny angles too each other.
Checked the fence, noted that there was a screw that is set the fence square to the table. (fiddly bloody thing, not the best design in the world). Anyways, on putting my square to the fence I am seeing quite a bit of daylight between the top and bottom looks like a bit of cupping in my fence.
Its not a huge amount, but its defintely not straight. Anyone else had this? should I take the fence back and ask for a new one?
Also, is anybody able to e-mail the "good" version of the manual? I think Gumby tried once before but I never received it.
Anyone got any other hints tips for setting up one of these beasts to get a nice square angle?
thanks

I have sent you a PM regarding that email. I did send it but will check your address on the PM.
I had to exchange the sliding bar which the fence arm sits on. It was bowed , which meant that , as the fence was moved out over the table and blades, the fence angle changed - it sloped backwards and was only a true 90 degrees in one spot. Carbatec exchanged that bar in 24 hours for me. It's still a bit fiddly and not quite 100% but I check it each time I use the machine. It's just something i put up with.If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

So is everyone elses fence perfectly straight? or is this cupping common.
Last night I clamped a bit 16mm MDF to the front of the fence to get a straight face to use as a fence. Helped me get my piece square, but Im losing 16mm of the width of the planer having to do this.
Was thinking I might have to drill some holes in the fence to bolt the MDF on, but its not my preferred option.

Hey Redback,
I remember some time ago members talking about fences..ground vs cast aluminium.
Apparently quite common problem with these machines.
I haven't bought my combo yet but this fence issue is on my explore list.
Have fun with the new toy (%#*^)

The face of my fence isn't cupped at all. Dead straight all the way along.

my experience with the combo
I bought a scheppach combo nearly 20 years ago and it still works. However, everything that is plastic either broke off or fell off. However, I've put thousands of lineal metres of hardwood through the thicknesse. I hardly every use the slot mortiser, never use the planer and often use the saw.
I only found this discussion when I launched a search for the little belt that works the thicknesser drive. It's perished now and the last time I asked, it was going to be very expensive to replace. As it began to stretch I kept adding gaffer tape to pad it out.
There a few very annoying things about the combo. First thing I did was get rid of all the guards. It's not an accurate machine. It's a pain to set up and the stabilising arm of the saw table seems to be designed to cut your fingers off. I also hate the fact that they have used so much plastic in the gears etc.
When thicknesing I use morning fresh detergent as a lubricant otherwise it jams up. I'm sure I'll think of some more things to say ut right now I had better get back to my search for a belt.

scheppach drive belt
I have the 260 combo for about 15 years. Last year my belts disintegrated when a friend was putting too great a load through the thicknesser. Woodworking Machines?? who were in Preston and who I bought it off - put me in touch with the guy in Tasmania who originally imported them - He still had some belts that he made for the scheppach. If you are prepared to wait a couple of days I might be able to find the number and address - they cost about $30 from memory. You might also try Carbatec in Qld who are now importing the range.
