The cutterhead looks ok, but something draws me to the thread/pin that goes through the shaft. I have no basis for this it just feels like it is not suites for the vibration and speed of 19000 rpm.

I really cant see the point. Not like its a tool for fine work. Leastwise not the way I use mine.

I absolutely love spiral cutters inworkshop equipment - jointer and thicknesser because of the massive noise reduction, and the small increase in quality of work. Presume the same noise reduction occurs with hand planers ?????

    Did some price comparisons:
    • Makita KP0800 plane - $229 - (Total Tools),
    • Makita 82 mm HSS blades - $17.69 - (Sharp Edge),
    • Makita 82 mm TCT blades - $64.04 - (Sharp Edge),
    • Chines spiral cutter head - $117.84 - (AliExpress).

The advertisement says they are "Carbide blades size:14*14*2.0*30degrees" - but the photos shows that the blades are staggered but not skewed.

If you need a new TCT blade then you would only have to pay a price premium of $53 for the "spiral" cutter head over straight blades. Otherwise, I think I would wait until they bring out a true spiral cutter head with skewed blades.

I got a pack of blades for mine in ebay years ago for something like $10. I don't use it much so still working through those. There are bargains around if you can be bothered.

It's possible in more skilled hands than mine the makita could be a precision tool, but no risk of that in my workshop

The big advantage of spiral cutters is noise reduction - literally halving the noise output on thicknessers and jointers.

Fully agree. I regard my Makita planer as a very noisy and rather rough scrub plane. Certainly not a smoother or jack plane.
