Steel work benches
G'DAy Ppl,
I am in the throws of setting up my garage (Read workshop)
My leaning is for a steel frame, built of 50x50 2mm RHS, with timber accessories; ie
Work top, vice and timber draws.
Does anyone know of suitable plans for a like bench? Or a site for them. Most sites have ones which are to advanced or not suitable for easy conversion to steel skeleton.
Thanks for any (clean)suggestions.

Strewth,
the guy simply asked about steel legs, WITH A WOOD TOP.
I take it all you blokes drive a flintstone mobile ie 100% wood. :P
As a more useful answer, may I suggest that the steel legs may not be as "dead" as a good solid hunk of 4x4. ie you will find that the bench will not be quite as dead as you may like when you start pounding away at it, it may be inclined to transfer impacts to the floor more than absorb them.
Cheers Ray

Gooday.
For what it is worth I have wooden and STEEL benches in my place. All wood, wood tops with steel legs and all steel.
I also have a welder and used to have a metal turning lathe as well which I must admit I miss now. Wished I had never sold it.
I am also proficient in both mediums and believe me it is helpful to make or repair something immediately to my satisfaction rather than pay some one else to do it in a weeks time and still not get it right!!!
People, remember that in most cases some workshops perform multi tasks as do our contributors.

I made my bench from steel and if suitable you can make a frame to suit a 2400x600 top out of two 6m lengths of steel (very little waste). As you may have noticed the top is a full sheet of ply or MDF cut down the middle. My tip would be to laminate two thicknesses of 19mm MDF to make a solid and flat top.
If you need more detail let me know and I'll dig out the cutting list.Dan
