Thicknesser Horsepower ???
I'm looking at buying a planer. At this stage I'm tossing up whether to buy a jointer and planer combo, or buying separate machines. My previous post had a response saying that the Carbatec 10' planer thicknesser combo was good. But I've noticed it only has 1 1/2 hp, as against the 15' planer which has 3 hp.
Is hp important when buying a planer? Should I go with the separate machines, (moving to a new house so will have enough room)?

The more horsepower, the less strain that is placed on the motor when doing cuts. The deeper the cut, or the wider the cut, or the harder the timber, the more HP that is needed for the machine to easily do it's job.
So it really depends on what you will be doing with the machines. If you will mostly be working with pine, HP isn't so much of an issue. But if you will be regularly be using heavy hardwoods, the HP could certainly be an issue.
Unfortunately there is no definitive answer. Your best bet is to get the biggest machines your budget can afford.
Also if it was me, I would choose separate machines - combo's are good for confined spaces or if you have a restricted budget, but having 2 separate and dedicated machines saves having to "convert" a combo between operations.Cheers.
Vernon.
