Thread: The Big Tool Scam

Having been somewhat amused by the lengths and methods some members will go into to convince SWMBO of the absolute must have new tool purchase; I thought I'd share a method I stumbled on somewhat by accident. Heres how it works although I think some senior members may have already used it.

OK, it generally only works with power tools and they should be under warranty at the time of your scam. Its best with 2nd or 3rd additions of the tools you already have ie drills, router sanders etc.

1. Firstly locate your must have new toy..err tool. (the one at the top of the list)
2. Go home and consult the other list (hers)...you know all those jobs your Gunna...the list that never seems to get shorter. Pick a task that is reasonably substantial, high in her priorities and that once started has to be completed. A job involving plumbing will generally instal the necassary urgency into the situation do to the lack of water etc

3. Go hammer and tong into the job using your existing beloved tools and make sure you are beyond the point of no return.

4. Simulate a small electrical burnout by burning some insulation tape or something whilst using the power tool. Curse and swear and walk around mumbling and lamenting. When SWMBO asks whats wrong explain your dilemma.

5. Call the guys at your local hardware having suitably briefed and bribed them beforehand. Shout loudly on the phone something like this "what, Melbourne!.,.2 to 3 weeks your joking..Ok Ok yes yep alright I'll bring it right down" (Geographics to suit)

6. Now explain to SWMBO that your power tool which you cannot complete the job without is going to be out of commission for at least 2-3 weeks and thats only if the warranty is good. Generally approval for a new purchase will be forthcoming especially when you explain the great deal you are getting.

7. Go down the hardware, give the boys a beer and pick up your new tool. Don't forget to get the hardware guys to call in a couple of weeks to say your old tool has been repaired and is ready for pickup.

Generally I just go home and face the music
