    Default Tool find- semi gloat

    Hi there,
I went to the local tip today, intending to deposit (a load of garden waste) but ended up making a withdrawal as well. The place was empty of other people, so did a slow cruise from green waste through building waste to the main tip face. Sitting on top were the remnants of someones old shed, and although I rushed a bit I did manage to score a few "treasures"! Could have taken them home in a beat up old tin trunk but left that behind.
The pieces I'm most happy with are these couple of retro electric drills, the small one (which I've already buffed up) is a Desoutter brand 'Streamline' made in the UK, and the big bugger is a Black and Decker, and when I carefully plugged them in they both worked! Shed decorations that actually work.
The plane is a very ordinary Stanley #4, but with some work I reckon it might be OK for Loki's first wood plane. Some reasonable hardware there, a roll of coarse sandpaper, and 2 ratchet tie downs in good nick...they are a fiddly bit of kit so I can sort of understand why someone tossed them at the dump!
Dump diving isn't dead there yet.

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

Well done mate. Funny that we live in a society where you have to look over your shoulder when taking something from the tip. They should pat you on the back.

Back in the '70s, I used to love having a scrounge around at the dump when Dad would drop something off. There was no-one manning the gate claiming anything remotely good for himself...

When I needed glass for some old style windows, dad went to the tip and voila! There were old dumped windows exactly the same as I had, complete with glass...just had rotten wood - perfect! And the number of times he fixed the old hoover washing machine with a trip to the dump for spare parts...

    Top find Andy

Just watch the drills the B&D may start ok but after a while they can develope an earth leak sometimes you get a bit of a warning a tingle then sap.

I know the B&D can have new bearings if needed and electrics overhauled if needed.

    The rest easy clean up

    Quite exciting isn't it.

Goovy looking little drill. I think that little blue clamp down I thinks from one of those hand powered mitre saws you can buy. Guided.

I found a 7.2 V 2 speed L + R Metabo battery drill with keyless chuck, battery and charger in the container at the recycling yard here a couple of months back. The whole lot was like new except for the fact the drill didn't work.

Opened her up to find a lead had fallen out of the trigger. Bent the sprung steel to increase the holding pressure (no screws) and slipped the wire back in. Been using it ever since. Only 7.2V but great for doing up screws in 1st gear...

    Default DeSoutter dril

Interested to see the DeSoutter Streamline drill, when I was learning my trade (very early 60s) the boss had several of these drills & they were magnificent! Good pickup, I almost envy you. I am not averse to a bit of scavenging myself & have developed a good relationship with the dump supervisor to that end. Last good find was a Technics 100+ watt a side stereo amp in perfect working order! I wasn't worried about repairs as that was my trade & business prior to retirement. Cheers, Les.
