    Talking New tools have arrived

Some time back I mentioned that my daughter was returning from the U.S. after living there for four years, and that some "play things" would be coming back with her. All from Lee Valley. Well they are here!!! The images below show the spaces in my tool cabinet filled with a Veritas #6 Fore Plane, a Veritas Low-Angle Smoothing Plane, and a Veritas Standard Block Plane. All have been tested and a beautiful. Have also included two images of the Osborne EB-3 Mitre Gauge. Don't know how I ever lived without one. And for those who are waiting on their clamps - thought that I would give you a preview of what you can expect. These are the 50" and 25" Bessy clamps. There are some other bits and pieces, but these are the main items. Now to go and make some noise and saw dust.

Must have been away with the fairies. On second thought change that to I was day dreaming. Probably about my new toys.

    Bob,

    Congrats on the new toys!!
I noticed you have a Mujingfang rebate plane in your cabinet.
Do you use it at all and is it any good?
I haven't tried to use mine yet but don't think it will be any good as the blade isn't offered much support. I am expecting chatter when I do finally use it.

Jack, I use it quite a bit and it works well. My only criticism is that the blade is wider than the body and therefore has to be moved from side to side depending the orentiation of the rebate. Not the best looking blade but has held its edge so far. However, I can only wonder if their quality is consistent (all bad or all good). Mine might be OK and someone elses a dog.

    Hi Bob

First off congrats on the new toys .. eh .. tools. A great selection. I know that you will use them well.

With regard the rebate plane's blade, this is normal. It is not meant to be flush with the body as, if it were, it would not plane into the corner. So set it up very slightly proud and try it out that way.

    Regards from Perth

Not sure of the Muji's, but the HNT Gordon, when setup with the blade central protrudes the best part of a pre-pubescent gnats dick either side of the body. Well mine does anyhows.
    Boring signature time again!

Derek, thanks for the input. As mentiones, it works fine so I must have set it up OK to achieve a clean corner cut. Just appears to be wider than necessary. Anyway, it only takes a moment to sdjust to the other side.

    Outback,
    Well mine does anyhows
. Interested to hear about the HNT Gordon - not interested in what yours does.

Now this story may be myth, but it is my understanding that the developer of the Leigh Jig, a man from the timber industry in Prince George, B.C., Canada, took his invention to many companies to give it a go. I have been told that it wasn't until Lee Valley undertook to market the product that the Leigh Jig got off the ground. I don't know if they put any money into it's development, but I understand that they were the first to on-sell it to consumers.

It would be interesting to have Bob Lee's spin on this. My story may not be based on fact but merely an urban myth.
