    Default TOWA sharpening jig.

    Hi people,
I've already posted this in general woodworking but thought it would be better suited in this forum.

I have a TOWA L120 3 5/8" electric hand plane given to me by my Dad when he no longer had a use for it.

The box originally contained a jig for sharpening and adjusting the blades in their mounting plates.

This jig is now missing. (I am tending to blame my 10yr old son but in truth I have probably put it in a safe place and will never find it again.)

Does anyone have such a jig that they no longer use and are willing to sell?

I have a jig but I also have a plane! I need the jig, but if you have no luck getting one I could send you a drawing with the dimensions. You could probably make one from a piece of hardwood.
Do you have the blade setting jigs - they are probably more important and a little more difficult to make considering the accuracy needed.
Let me know if I can be of assistance -
Incidentally - my little Towa still goes well, it would probably be as old as your father's - I would have bought it in the early 70s. Pity Ryobi don't make such good gear now.

    Cheers

    Default Towa Jig

    Hey Geoffs,
The dimensions would be great thankyou.
I can only vaguely remember what they ( both the sharpeninig and setting jigs look like. It's been a log time since I used it 'cause the blades were so dull.
I spent 4 hours sharpening the them on an oil stone yesterday and my finger tips are really tender this morning. I can shave the hairs off my arm with them now so it was worth the effort.

Thanks again for the offer and I look forward to your reply

Let me have your email address - I'll attach a couple of pictures as well - you can only put 1 photo per post on here. I am not a very good sketcher.
How did you get the blades back without the setting jig? or maybe you haven't yet!
Might be a day or two before I get back
    Cheers

Wow! Long time since I've heard anything on here. As with the previous query - 3 years ago! - let me have your email address and I'll scan them and send them to you. My little Towa still goes well so we can all hope that yours will give good service despite its age.

Might take me a day or two, can't find my original drawings which I did for Geoff P. (Bit of confusion here with 2 Geoffs!) I know they are here somewhere but they are not in the obvious folder - 'woodworking', that would be too easy.

    Geoff P
Do I read that you never got my original reply? I certainly sent it. I'll put all the info together again and send it to both of you. Just wish I could find the original drawings etc.
How have you got on with plane since then?
If you didn't get the material I wish you had pestered me a bit more.
    Cheers

Why not convert it to Tungsten disposable blades.

It's a good idea but there may be a problem. This is an old plane and uses an odd length blade (92mm from memory), not sure that tungsten edged blades are readily available. I know I had some difficulty getting steel ones the first time I replaced mine.
The blade setting jig, and how to use it, are still needed.

    Hey GeoffS
    I received your plans.
I think I still have then "in my shed" (scary). I'll have a look as soon as I sort my 13 yr olds trip to hospital out.
I manufactured a jig out of a lubricated nylon block. Not perfect but it does the job.
I haven't used it for a while and would have to do some thinking to remember how but it works.

    Hey Bazza,
these planes are so old I doubt that you could find blades to fit.

Blades are available, not branded Towa or Ryobi, and I can't remember what but they are available - just have to take the old ones and study the hole patterns. Because they are longer there are not many options!

I also have a Towa - with the longer base. Went looking for instructions for redisgOOd and found I had a sharpening kit (incl instructions) - this is a grinding wheel that is driven by the planer motor and belt drive. Do you have instructions for the sharpening jig - the one that holds the 2 blades at an angle - and blade setup? If you do would appreciate a copy as cannot find mine.

And just to confuse more another Geoff
