Why do you want to buy a router that isn't sold or supported in Australia???

You can buy one from NZ or the UK (or fleaBay....), but you'll be stuck for parts. I have a Triton MOF001 (currently awaiting parts.....), and to be honest they are not that good.

TRA001 is more powerful, often table mounted, a bit big and heavy as a handheld router. MOF001 is less powerful, perfect for handheld use, works OK table mounted, and has an accessory to give above table height adjustment. The last of these points was the reason I bought mine, but its also the part that broke

Seriously....until Triton distribution in Oz is sorted out, I'd be looking at other brands (Makita, Panasonic for example).

This topic has been covered a lot of times, but when Triton was still being sold in aus, the MOF001's were considered one of the best handheld routers, and OK for table use and the TRA001 router was the bees knees for table use. I have two of the MOF001's, and think they are fantastic. I broke one by dropping it, but it was fixed some 12 months ago.

IF triton was still being sold in Aus, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, but they're not and to be honest I wouldn't recommend them at all now. I'd probably go for a decent Makita instead.

    Cheers,

From memory, one of the big Triton routers sold recently on ebay for over $700

You could buy a new one from the UK and ship it here for a fraction of that.......

Last week I saw a TRA-001 in a local hardware shop (the unpopular one, that hardly anyone goes to....), been sitting there a loooong time, for A$499.

    In fact, this guy

Triton Woodworking power tools from The Woodworking Centre

has new TRA-001 for GBP220 and MOF001 for GBP175. At current exchange rates thats A$400 odd for the big router, A$320 or so for the small one. Both new stock.

Even if it cost $100 to ship the thing here, you'd still be ahead.

My opinion of the MOF001 is that it is ok as a table-mounted router, and ok handheld - nothing better than that. Even though it is smaller than the TRA, it is still rather top heavy for handheld work.

Without local support, it is not advised getting either. And with regards to local support, not sure it still holds true, but for a while there at least, repairers refused to touch Triton outright because of the unavailability of spares.

The Dec/Jan issue of 'The Shed' magazine has an advertisment stating that Carba-tec has been appointed as the NZ distributor of Triton tools and that most of the product are or will be svailable soon in Auckland.
I have seem both of the routers advertised for sale in the last couple of weeks on Trade Me.

I'd heard rumours that Carbatec NZ were going to have Triton - that's good news as far as spares go.

Still no news on Australian distribution............probably the largest and most enthusiastic group of Triton users, and we can only get spares/support from overseas

I'll keep my MOF001 going as long as I can with imported spares, but I certainly wouldn't buy new Triton gear under any circumstances.

But......a lot cheaper than some of the silly prices on fleaBay. Plus, it was new, unused, in the original box.

Hopefully if SOME local source of Triton becomes available, even if it is NZ, all the silly fleaBay prices will get blown out of the water. A lot of profiteering has gone on with Triton products since they closed their doors IMHO.

Since the Carbatec stores in Oz are all independently owned, what's the chances of a tie up between Carbatec NZ and the Sydney/Melbourne outlets??

Can't answer that question, but the "all independently owned" sounds wrong - I was under the impression that Sydney was the only independent, the rest all come under the Brisbane (Head Office) banner. Melbourne and Adelaide definitely do, and Tassie probably does as well.
