Cool Anyone using (or used) a Jacobs Power Collet for their router?

    Evening gents.

I took the punt & purchased a keyless collet for my Makita 3612BR from eBay USA (US$50.00). I have never tried one before so it was a leap of faith - no doubt someone will tell me they're available over here for substantially less. However, trying to change bits on/in the router table is an ongoing pain in the ace anyway, so I'm hoping this thing is an improvement.
Luckily for me my son keeps an apartment in Iowa city, so I only have to pay the local freight on these things (toys, toys, toys ) & he brings them back each time he returns to OZ.
This is a Jacobs Power Collet model 33843 (see link to picture below - hopefully). It says that it fits a Makita 3612, so I'm assuming the 3612BR is the same machine in the Australian version. Yes, I know what happens when you assume.

Anyway, and again, any comments on previous experiences or knowledge in these matters would be thankfully received.
If the comments are all bad, does anyone want to buy a new Jacobs Power Collet model 33843 to suit a Makita 3612?

    Thanks. Wayne

Jacobs withdrew these from the market some 3 or 4 years ago as they vibrate badly and will either loosen the grip on the router bit (worst immediate problem) or they will cause micro vibration effects on the router shaft and lead to failure of the router bearings(worst medium term effect). Great idea, but Jacobs have been back at the drawing board on this project for some years. I would not use one in any of my routers !

Go to the Jacobs site-they probably have a cash-back recall if there are safety issues.

Thanks for that feedback, Lyctus. I had a sneaking suspicion there must have been a problem with them, otherwise they would be in far more common usage. Going by the deafening silence about them here it sounds like everyone has given them a wide berth. Bugger indeed!

That's a good idea, Gregoryq, I'll see what I can track down as far as a Jacobs' web-site and any product recall issues. Maybe they have developed the new model by now & will swap the old one? Never know your luck.

    Many thanks gents. Wayne
