Thumbs down Wandering belt Metabo BAE 75 1010W belt sander

I bought a Metabo belt sander in April. I've tried a number of belts and the tracking is only good when the machine is being held in the air but when I'm running it over some ply I'm cleaning up the belt wanders all over the place.

I've figured out it's due to me every so slightly tilting the machine to the left or right when moving it around. The belt has come completely off three times this morning.

I'm using 80 grit Diablo belts.

Is it normal for a belt sander to be so finnicky about technique and sensitive to slight downwards pressure on one side of the machine?

I suspect it wouldn't happen with greater tension on the belt but I can't see how to adjust it without disassembling the tensioning mechanism.

Just want to get some opinions before I send it back for a refund and get a Makita instead.

I have owned 2 a black and decker had it for 10 years and no problem with tracking did have problems with the magic blue smoke coming out of it. Which led me to my second, FIL was about 90 when he decided he no longer needed his old makita (like really old square shaped belt sander) I have had it about 4 years, no problem with tracking, also no problem with any smoke , I do -push - pull - sideways - backwards - use it upside down as a linisner - on edges of boards. So yes there seems to be a problem with yours,

As a belt sander gets older and has done a fair bit of work when you pull the lever back to change a belt sometimes the spring doesn't return the belt with all of its intended strength. There can be a build up of old saw dust which will hold back the adjuster. If this is the case with yours when you return the lever to tention the belt give the adjuster and light hit from a metal hammer. Don't get silly and bash the hell daylights out, just a few light taps and see if the tensioner jumps forward to take up the slack.

As I said yours may be a bit new to have the problem buts its an easy way to check out the Sander. Even if that doesn't work take the sander outside in the open without a belt and use compressed air to shift any build up of saw dust. Yes you could be tempted to use some WD40 but this may make the dust into a bit of a slurry and make it worse (don't know)

See how you go and keep us posted
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Take it back. Buy the big makita. I have two of them they’ve done thousands of kilometres and never had to touch anything on them

I've got the smaller Makita 9910SP (3") and apart from the really odd size dust port, it's been fantastic. I haven't babied it at all and it's survived being clamped in my vice a few times to use as linisher as well. If your newly new one isn't retaining the belt, get a refund/exchange.
