Default Who can make me one of these?

Which metalworker out there will be able to make me one of these?

This is a spindle attachment to my old Sher workmate. There are meant to be a bunch of these spindles (of different lengths) to attach grinding wheels, wire brushes, honing wheels etc. (The short one shown is for circular saws, which thankfully is not used!)

Of course, you can't buy these anymore, so what I need is additional spindles to be made.

The dimensions are all imperial. I haven't had the thread measured yet, but I guess it will be a standard fine thread. I would have thought this would be pretty easy to make if you had a lathe and milling machine.

If anyone out there can help me, or can redirect me to someone in Melbourne who can, then please let me know.

    Thanks,
    John.

Gee, I was kind of hoping someone out there with a metalworking lathe was going to volunteer...

I visited a local engineering supplier, who confirmed it is a standard 1/2 inch UNF thread. They said any machining company wouldn't want the work, thought the tafe was a good idea. Also suggested just welding a nut onto a 1/2 inch bolt. If all else fails and the tafe can't help, I'll try that.

I'd do it, but as of right now, I don't have a complete metal lathe and 1/2" is a little too big to turn in my drill press.

I doubt that just welding a nut onto a bolt will be all that great as alignment might be a problem, seeing as this thing is likely to spin at a great rate of knots.

How desperate are you for this thing? I start lining the furnace tomorrow, so I can cast the rest of the lathe, which then needs machining, then I could make it. But there's gotta be someone else around who is more local that could do it for you.

And someone who could do it now, rather than in 2-20 weeks depending on what comes up in the next few weeks.

Why not just get a UNF "long nut" these are about 40mm long then use a UNF bolt to mount your wheels by screwing into the nut .
Try "Keables" in the top end of the city , they have an amazing array of things with treads on them. They may even gave "Stud extenders" exactly like you want.

Ok smarties, I guess I deserved some of those responses...

To answer Ashore, yes, both threads are UNF. The more I think about it, having this manufactured is just not economical. So I think the nut and bolt option will be the way to go, as long as everything is balanced. Thanks for the tip about Keables, I will try them next week.
