3/8th skip tooth reply
So after looking at the price of buying 3/8 skip tooth chain and getting prices of over $600 when a normal roll will only set you back $300-$400
I came to the conclusion that with the trusty ol' angle grinder and a lil bit of time I could knock one out quick smart
and here's the results
114 DL about $32 @ $0.28 per DL
57 cutters removed 1 in 3 to leave 38 Cutters
20 minutes effort @ $10-$20 depends on what your hourly is (or imagined)
I put the chain on an old bar and proceeded to grind the cutters off with cutting disc. first the left side then the right, I did this from the outside of the cutters which in hindsight I would do from the inside next time.
Once I got them roughly off the rakers were next to go.
You can see the rough cut in pic skip trial
I then put the rough cutter on the nose of the bar and cleaned it up.
Cleaned cutter pic skip trial C
Pic skip trial A shows end result with the green pain being the joining link.
Preliminary conclusion
Possible issue with heat from cutting/grinding teeth off (weakening joining links)???
need to stabilize chain better while grinding ( safety Issue)
Cost benefit looks promising
next stage to be a trial run on new bar just to make sure it holds together
I will make a full complement chain with all cutters to compare speed and drag issues
All comments welcomed but please leave personal issues off other peoples threads
Cheers Rob

I can get it for 33 cents a drive link for a single chain or 30 cents a link for 5 chains or more in skip, already made up, do not see the point in butchering a perfectly good chain. Dealers always charge about double the price because they don't sell it and it sits on the shelf. Oh and true skip is left skip right skip not left right skip.
My 2 cents worthI am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

Hi Rob,
I'm not a big skip chain user so I won't comment on that, but I reckon your rakers need to be dropped a bit more.
I measure your "raker - cutter tip - wood" angle to be ~4º. I'd be looking to up that to 6º.
Cheers
Bob
