    Default Advice on lucas mill

    Hi All

I am going to have a look at a secondhand lucas mill this week and was wondering if any of the guru's here would care to give me some advice on what to look out for. I beleive that it is a 7/23 with aluminium rails, electric start, 7 blades and no slabber. From what I understand I will be the 3rd owner. Now whilst I have used one a couple of times and seen one used many times, parting with the hard earned is a bit different. So outside of general condition is there anything specific to look out for.
    Thanks in advance.

GIve the unit a general look over like anything, look for any welds that may be cracked, check to see if the unit may have been dropped. Look under the carriage frame where the PVC lock actuates looking for cracks or indentations due to over tensioning the PVC lock.

Look over the engine, check cooling fins and oil for how it may have been looked after, look for leaks around engine and gearbox.

Check blade hub bearing for play - although (I can't be sure) I think the 7-23 have the blade bearing incorporated into the gearbox like the 10's and 8's do now, so less of a chance poor maintenance has led to premature bearing wear - this kind of wear means a replacement swingframe/gearbox!

Check the rollers for play, a new set are only about $12-$15 per wheeel though so not a big thing if they are loose/worn, but certainly something you can point out when negotiations start.

Make sure everything runs smoothly, like side shift winder, lock handle, winch chains etc. Check driveblets for splits - again a bargaining point if need be.

THEN switch it on and do some cutting

    Hope it helps good luck

Very helpful post Al. I might enlist your services next time I buy a ten year old car.

As well as all above, give the tracks a sight over to make sure they are straight and true.

Paul, I keep telling myself I don't know anything about cars, but it seems every spare second outside of milling I'm a mechanic, with the recent work on Bob - rebuilding the starter motor, sorting out the chaincase, troubleshooting the fuel tank, replacing rear shocks and brakes in my partners Subaru, both front driveshafts in my olds Hyundai, fixing electric trailer brakes and servicing Sparky with a change of all the rollers, new head install plus top and bottom ball joints on my Nissan...lets hope the mower goes later today.

DAMN, I was supposed to mention the rails too!!!

I know the feeling. I thought my days tinkering with cars were over but recently I had to get grease on my hands a few times .
