    Default Advice on milling please.

    Hello to all,

    A friend of mine has recently returned from a holiday in Darwin
    and very generously presented me with two African Mahogany
    logs he " picked up for a slab of beer." they are both approx
    500mm in diameter and 2m long. I have the opportunity to
    have them milled in a couple of weeks. At this point i'm thinking
    backsawn 25mm boards would be the most useful outcome for me.

    Has anyone had any experience with this timber?
    Should i perhaps go thicker and resaw once it's dry?
    We are expecting a hot dry summer in vic this year, some older
    threads have suggested this timber is fairly stable, however
    any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Also on a similar subject the mill owner has some english elm
    logs 750mm diam 4m length that he'll be milling at the same time.
    but not having milled elm before is uncertain of the best application
    for milling boards for furniture making ie quarter sawn vs backsawn.

    Once again any recommendations and advice would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Default Milling mahogany

    Backsaw it and ONLY backsaw it. I have cut alot of it for a company in Kununurra and it is as lively as hell. It will spring alot when you cut it which is ok . Strip it out with alot of stickers, say every 250mm, yes that many and place as much weight on it as you can. Very very pretty timber at the end of it all though

    I'd say he is talking of the Mahogany as English Elm is usually very stable

    I'll certainly take that advice on board, i assume you were talking about the mahogany.

    Does anyone have any info, experience to share about milling
    elm, the tree has been down for only a few months.

    The type I cut is african native and grows like wildfire, mature enough to cut in 8 years. Its botanical name is Kaya Senigalensis
