    Talking remington chainsaw

    Hi,
I have just restored a saw which looks identical to the remington shown in post, except that my saw is called powerlite pl4 and the word 'powerlite' is actually cast in to the the top cover where the saw in the picture has remington, I was wondering if the member who posted that article could tell me where he got all his tech specs from cheers nz west coaster.

My chaps are from Labonville (labonville.com). I have both their full wrap 6 ply and 10 ply competition chaps. Their chaps are high quality (check out their test video on their website) and well priced. Their 6 ply full wrap chaps cost US$67 so even the outrageous US$35 shipping gets them here at a reasonable price. The 10 ply are quite a bit bulkier and would be a PITA to use in the bush - I guess that's why they call them competition chaps! I note they currently have a 20% sale up till july 31. If you do buy some make sure you ask for USPS not UPS shipping. UPS charge about double the USPS rate.

For straight chainsaw use I use a Stihl helmet with metal screen and clip on Peltor Muffs . Peltor muffs are amongst the best muffs you can get. When I use my mills I prefer a full face polycarbonate face shield and behind the head Peltor muffs. I also have gel padded gloves for straight chainsaw use but on the mill I use a pair of leather ironclads.

What chain are you using? 3 or five skip tooth.
I have used various skip chains but I find using full comp chains, even on the 60" bar, works best for me.

well well, just so happens I got a call for an Arborist mate and opportunity was knocking. Had some spare time this week, so yanked out the trusty old electric Mchulloch, dusted off the Alaskan and milled up a Walnut log. Wasn't much walnut in it though. Mostly rotted away due to poor tree care when someone lopped off a limb incorrectly once upon a time.

Of course I forgot to run my metal detector over it before we started and you guessed it, we hit a hidden roofing nail.!

Leccy chainsaw is still kicking ass, ate the timber like butter.

Only got 2 really good boards out of it though, 50mm thick and about 2200mm long. It would make an awesome benchtop for a buffet or a hallway table. Reminded me of the Dreamtime spirits.

I think its around 1800-2000watt. Its was only $150 from the big green shed. I think there are cheap GMC ones going on ebay at the moment.

Yeah it was good fun. So much easier on the chain cutting wet timber. It was a major pain in the ass using my little mill though, had to keep flipping the log around because it will on cut 300m max. Now my mate is interested in it to, Ive got a little boost of inspiration to get my 42" mill happening.

One of the major problems with doing the whole thing is being able to move a huge log once its been felled....so...freakin...heavy!
But I guess once I have my big mill up and running, you could slice a log up in to a few pieces on site and then transport it home.
