    Default Amamoor Slabs

    How sweet is this....?

1.2 near the camera, 800mm at the far end and 4m long, really pretty!!!

and what about this, another billet from the same tree

it's 1.0m wide and 2.5m long. I was pretty happy with the way the chain was cutting so I did a bit of a time trial...

    Start the clock
sharpen chain by hand with file,
    cut 1st slab,
    remove slab to pile,
    back up slabber,
    drop mill,
sharpen chain by hand with file,
    cut 2nd slab,
    remove slab to pile,
    back up slabber,
    drop mill
    Stop the clock
Time taken 30 min (didn't note seconds sorry)
Actual cutting time was 6min per slab, now for all those out there that like to push like hell, I had 1 hand on the carriage and the finish from the chain is probably the best part of the above timeline...

Now it's easy enough to get quick cutting times, but we all know that is at the expense of a smooth finish, but take a look, the chain didn't leave more than about 0.5mm teeth marks in the surface, no washboard, no deviation from pushing too hard and the customer gets a fantastic product in a quick time.

You know what's coming next don't you???

Yes, Yes, we know what is coming next
Nice looking bit of wood there too with a pretty good surface finish.

I did a we time trial the other day on a semi dry bloodwood 500 wide 3 m long close to 6 mins cutting time or 0.5 m/min just as a bit of an idea as to how long it takes to complete a cut using the CS mill.
The next cut was a bit slower out to 8 mins, didnt sharpen in between cuts

I ended up going through 3 files over the two days, the first two had been used a bit, but I got to the stage where they just wouldn't cut the tooth, so had to get the boss to hit the shop and bring me some new ones out to site- love having on site service

Pete, I found I was doing 2 strokes on each tooth between slabs, was hell quick

Yeah Bob, I can't say it all the time otherwise you guys will take me as some kind of crank pot just purely obsessed with Lucas mills

As for cutters, the chain is a bit of a stuff up actually, I had it made for me from 27RX but it was made 20 drive teeth too short... I got the local guys to break it and add 20 links, but they didn't look at it or if they did they didn't care. They put in 20 links of full compliment FULL chisel chain, and made it left right, skip two, left right, skip two, left right, then the chain went into SEMI chisel right left, skip five, left right skip five and so on.

So normally I have 13 pairs of cutters for 150mm cut, but with this chain I have 12 pairs of semi chisel and 3 pairs of full chisel - a real bugger of a chain

Oh don't worry, we think that already - but we understand

Interesting, "Stuff up" or not it seems to do the job !

OK - can you check my analysis (it's probably crap ,but something to get things started
15 pairs or 30 cutters total.

    30 minutes total
    - 12 min for cutting
    - 4 minutes to move each slab - 8 minutes total
    = 10 minutes of sharpening/2 = 5 minutes per sharpen = 10 seconds spent on each cutter - that's 10 strokes .

Maybe my 10 seconds is a long time to spend filing one cutter - do they really need that much time spent on them?

Bob in the 30 min, also had to drop the mill and bring the head back, power down, carriage brake on switch off oil feed for bar, get file from beside mill, get around power head to front of bar before being ready to sharpen and do that twice in the 30min. I know it isn't a huge amount of stuff, but it all adds to the time.

I figure I was spending about 5 secs per tooth, when you also factoring in moving the chain along to the next tooth, making sure the sharpening angle was rght before sharpening all those little extra bits, but was only doing 2 or sometimes 3 strokes per tooth

Definitely won't in the future... but having said all this the only thing I found with that chain was the Full Chisel teeth seemed to dull much quicker - between each slab they had to be sharpened, but the semi could have gone another slab - sometimes I did go back for a second, but it bogged down a heck of a lot toward the end.
