Phil, not sure if your mill came with its manual, but these are a couple of cut patterns from the Lucas Mill Manual for quartersawing...

and here is the pattern suggested for backsawing too, just for reference...

to be honest I don't often mess around with taking the two boards top and bottom from the chunk in the heart, but if the log is sound and you are wanting to get the most out of your logs then it isn't much effort to slice them out.
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
    Allan.

I mill my turning blanks(3x3,4x4etc) from the sides of the log, then mill boards as the growth rings straighten, and try to achieve quarter-sawn where possible...bigger logs will certainly give a higher % of quarter-sawn material..if you want your wood to remain stable, you must quarter saw it,although some species can be back/riftsawn without too much movement..certainly the mode of seasoning is critical as well (nice and slow out of direct sunlight)..MM

    Default thanks again

Thanks Allan & Mapleman, have cleared around the second tree now, one more to go, but bloody work is interfering with this. Have printed out the cutting diagrams above and will fold and place in pocket, as I'm probably going to be on my own I'm thinking of vertical cuts first followed by horizontal so as to leave the mill at the "far end" of the log making it easy to load out the milled lumber, I guess I'll find out soon enough if this will work, will have a few wedges in the pocket to place at the start of the horizontal to stop it dropping on the blade, but will this work?
I'll post on this thread as I start the milling

Thanks for all the advice, I learn by doing, but if one doesn't understand the basic theory one doesn't learn by doing
