    Default australian standard changes. 2082-2007

i just got my copy of AS2082-2007 and they have changed a few things.

the main thing is the defonition of heartwood.

it used to be anything within 50mm of the center of the tree.

it is now " teh growth centrer of te tree and/or any timber adjacent to the center that exibits fungal attack, brittle heart and comprestion faliure.

this makes it verry hard to determain exactly what the heart wood is. and how far you can cut befor teh boards are ungradeable.

also a boxed heart post was suposed to be a minimum of 175mm square now they allow any size boxed heart so long as heartwood and asociated cracking dose not consist of more than one third of the peice it can also dose not have to be in the center.

are tehy just going to keep lowering standards untill there is non left or what?

I can't see how this is lowering the standard since it is improving the definition of heartwood.

The "growth centre" is a far better term than the "tree centre" because the latter can be interpreted as the geometrical centre of the tree and these are not always the same

Also 50 mm from the tree centre could be too much - or not enough. Sometime, especially on young or small trees the growth centre is good and clear of fungus right up to the 10 mm from the growth centre. Other times the heart and associated fungal affected wood might be 150 mm wide across the heart.

They also want to avoid arguments once the tree is cut since it is impossible to work out where the tree centre was, once the tree is cut up whereas the growth centre is always identifiable.

it was 50mm of the growth center before. now there is a million way to inturprit what is heart and what is not. its open to opinion.

gradeable timber can now be cut right up to the center not that i have a problem with this as i belive its just as good as the rest of the tree if it is sound. it just makes it hard for graders.
