    Default Back into it

Finally got around to putting a few lightning struck Blackbutts to better use than termite fodder. Had four available, one easy, two problematic and one I'm not touching with a barge pole. Tree one was a drive straight to it job but trees two and three were on a steep slope which required some fancy [ and scary ] tractor work to build an access track. Anyway I fell two of them, docked them to length, and dragged them down to the mill, yes its a portable mill but I can move a log faster than I can assemble and disassemble it by myself and I have shelter, water an food at the mill site and it's only 40 meters from the beer fridge for when I've had a gutfull.
The yield from the two trees was seven logs from 2.8 to 4.7 metres and 500 to 700 diameter. After milling I can be more specific, three good, two not too bad and two absoluteIMG_0044.jpgIMG_0051.jpgIMG_0055 (1).jpgIMG_0057.jpgIMG_0053.jpg rubbish. More faults than a Lada Samara. I managed to get the timber I needed which was a complete frame for my brothers new 70 sq m minus roof framing as he intends to use trusses.I will leave the other tree standing until he gets a price, stick building a roof may suddenly seem like a good idea. I also cut some special orders for other people who are all relatives and who have probably forgotten they asked for them, one request dates back at least two years.
It had been nine months since I last fired up the mill and that's a long time between sawdust fixes but I have now retired so plenty of time for work that actually has a point. Highlight for the week was the "automatic debarking on impact" feature the trees were fitted with. Lowlight was how obviously unfit I am and when did 4 x 4 hardwood almost double in weight. Maybe it's time I took up the offers of help I receive but I enjoy working alone at whatever pace I choose , although it would be nice two have someone else to blame when things go pearshaped.

IMG_0076.jpgIMG_0079.jpgFollowing on from above, the cheap secondhand truss deal fell through so the third tree was felled to cut the rafters. I had timber for the ceiling joists so it wasn't like I needed a huge amount which as the photo shows was just as well. For once I decided to think positively and instead of leaving it lie were it fell until someone needed a driveway pipe, I dragged it down and with great optimism started milling. For about ten minutes. The gearbox bearings decided to call it quits which was not unexpected as they were rumbling pretty badly and that was to be the final log before a planned rebuild. All bearings and seals were available at the local CBC so everything was replaced while it was apart. The Peterson owners manual has a whole section with easy to follow instructions for gearbox rebuilds so it was always something I expected I would have to do one day. So with some optimism lost along with a whole day it was back to the less than perfect log. I got all twenty 125 x 40 rafters plus a 200 x 50 that was required and that was it, another two weeks of the termites chewing and I would have been a couple short. I suppose my next post should be in the Shed section to show how it all pans out.
