Bandmilling Black wattle(Sally wattle){Acacia Salicina}
Had the chance a while ago to mill a Sally wattle tree that came down in storm. This tree is a pest up here but I love the timber, It mills Well,is easy to work with woodworking tools and takes a finish well, it' only drawback is it is hard to find long straight sections, without twist.Anyway here are the photos. The one on the mill has some interesting colour, this was from the butt of the tree. I suspect it is some sort of Fungi that produced the red Colour.
I cut this on my Homemade Bandmill using a 1"1/4 Woodmaster B Bi metal blade, It seems to work well on the Outback Timbers, I have Just cut some Yellowjacket,Silver Wattle, and Qld Myrtle the Local Wood Group collected on a recent trip out west, I will post the Photo's when I download them off the camera.
Cheers, Jon

Nearly! Its the Petrol FE35 the one with the Gold Motor and Grey Bonnet, I salvaged this from the Dump with no Wheels and split in half at the Gearbox, I have put it back together using scavenged parts, the Wheels and Rims are from a International B414.
Cheers Jon

The Black Wattle comes up really well.
In your picture of the chest the right hand side looks to be curved. Is that correct or is it a camera distortion. Either way in the pic it looks interesting. I assume that particular chest was made from a previous batch of Black Wattle.

Black Wattle
On the subject of "Black Wattle" I was scratching my head on the latin name of Acacia Salicina as I had thought "Black Wattle" was Acacia Decurrens. So I did a little research and it transpires that quite a few acacias use the term "Black Wattle," including Salicina and Decurrens.

Paul,
The end of the chest is curved as I left the Natural edge on the boards, the photo below shows it much clearer as it is taken from the Right hand side. the chest is made from an earlier tree. There is a lot of Black wattle around me, so I am always listening out for a Chainsaw in the neighbourhood. The Tree loppers are happy for someone to take the Trunk away as it saves them having to cut it up and chip it.

Some pretty amazing wood from what is considered a 'pest'!
For the sake of my sanity, why is it a 'pest'? Fast spreading by root or something?
A+ on the box too! What kind of size am I looking at?
