    Default bandsaw pics for BobL

BobL was asking for few pics of my bandsaw sled setup...so....

    Both sleds on infeed side
    both sleds.jpg

lead sled on BS table (the only difference is it's longer)
    lead sled on BS table.jpg

    Basic view of BS table
    Attachment 120122

gap between blade and sled (about 8mm) or thereabouts wanted it as close as practicle
    Attachment 120124

4 inch thick slab of ironbark on sleds bit of a curve not the best bit of selection
    Attachment 120123

    taking the wany edge off
    Attachment 120125

setup for first board I set up the rollers 6 inches from the fence so for a 1 inch thick board I set the fence at 7 inches
    Attachment 120126
    Attachment 120127
not a clear pic but it is set at 7 inches
    Attachment 120135

first board part way thru cut
    Attachment 120128

    a couple of boards off
    Attachment 120130

nearly all the way thru 3rd board (router table in foreground)
    Attachment 120129

a little bit of tension so had to straighten the edge
    Attachment 120137
    Attachment 120138

end view of boards from slab
    Attachment 120131

    side view
    Attachment 120132

to set up for normal bandsawing take rollers off and bridge
    Attachment 120133

undo a clamp and infeed moves back out of the way
    Attachment 120134

If I am resawing something 2m ish or longer I undo the infeed extention
    Attachment 120148
one day I might have the whole infeed and outfeed move sideways

I can then move the infeed east west to fully support the board on the rollers, it makes it really easy to line the board up with the fence, otherwise it tends to ride on the edge of the track and can fall off
    Attachment 120149

    normal fence setup
    Attachment 120136

for 1 inch set fence as per normal
    Attachment 120139

I usually cut 1"x1" rack sticks from whatever is left over
    Attachment 120140

I can remove the bar that supports the sled on the outfeed side
    Attachment 120145

    it just lifts out
    Attachment 120146

and drop in the outfeed rollers for when I am cutting longish boards
    Attachment 120147

they can ride along the outfeed bar but they catch on the cross supports
    hope this helps Bob

The pics are bloody fantastic Peter.

And so nicely laid out too!

Sure got the old juices flowing.

Back in early 2007 I scored a 2.4 m long set of rollers from a bit of dumpster diving.

I was thinking of popping out every second roller and making up a second set of rollers so I have equal length in and out feed rollers for my 19" bandsaw. Then do the same thing as you did to your fence. Looks like a good summer project to me.

Glad u like, I like to have a bit of a logical sequence to my pics, maybe its the half baked gingerbeer in me
I got the call from the tree loppers this morn, so I got a small silky oak log with 2 100 thick slabs which I cut into 100x100.
Took some pics, just about to add them to post
Ahh a good bit of dumpster diving there and a good find

The thing I found with slabs on the rollers was that unless the slabs r flat and even they wernt too good when I was trying to cut an edge off or cut to a size, the slab moves and bounces around a fair bit and any sort of packing doesnt work, urs might be better if u keep them closer together, mine r about 300 apart with cross supports which the slabs tended to get stuck on, the slab on the sleds was much better as I could put packing in if needed, clamp to the sleds if needed, sleds move a lot easier, self wieght can hold them in place, I can adjust the position of the slab on the move if I need to, no cut line to try and cut to, I nearly dont need the rollers for most of what I do but they r still good for flat boards that r to be ripped or resawn, this has been my experience.

Sleds that roll on the rollers might be the go, I think there have been a few posts along this line
I reckon u will tackle any probs as u find them and sort it in a typical BobL style

    Ill add the pics here
4' thick slab about 300 wide on sleds
    Attachment 120154
    Attachment 120155

both edges cut off ready to cut 100 wide
    Attachment 120156

need to clamp the slabs with a lot of wieght hanging off the sled, can over balance and fall off
need to clamp for wider cuts can over balance.jpg

not much colour in the local well watered variety, but they do come up allright, a light tan sort of shade

    Thumbs up

Peter that is a great look at your set-up.

Now, I might have missed this , how big is your saw, what size blade & type. and what brand.??

I have some stuphph that I want to slab when I get back home. Nowhere near that size but I like the look of how your planks come out. I did some without the advantage of a sled and the results were not what I had hoped for.

Thanks for the advice Pete, which all makes a lot of sense. I think I might go for sleds on the rollers.

My bandsaw started life as a CarbaTec 19" 2hp arrangement
    Mods since then....
    3kw (4hp) 3ph motor
faster blade speed... 3000 and 3900 ft/min I think, working from memory here
    completely different blade guide system
    better dust extraction
    longer better fence
the single most important improvement was the lennox woodmasterB blade 1 1/4" wide...like chalk and cheese compared with the horrible thing that came with machine

I have a couple of posts in the bandsaw forum where I go into a bit more detail but that's basically it

Bob, I think it was Dia densie (spelling?) that had a sled on roller setup or maybe not something painted yellow seems to ring a bell, anyway in the BS forum a while back now.
The next mod is gonna be a longer roller as this will support wider boards better, at least 6" long, I would suggest if u r going to incorporate a roller/s on the xmas project make them 6" or longer

A few more pics cutting up lumps of raintree this morning...

Y I like the sled/s.... I can plonk a bit roughsawn on it, line the blade up, line the exit point up by eye, pack as required, decide whether to clamp or not then saw just like this
    Attachment 120268

    packing as required
    Attachment 120269

    saw rough off
    Attachment 120270

    and continue from there
    Attachment 120271

    a bit more crotch

OK - how did you change the speed? Was it a pulley change?

By rollers do you mean sleds? or the roller wheels under the sleds?

    My rollers are 16" wide.

That sure is nice looking lump of stuff.

    Default rollers

Sorry Bob, I wasn't real clear there, the roller/s I was refering to was what we might call a resaw roller, the one I currently have setup is only 50mm wide, I was thinking something more like this, I picked these up somewhere, made the frame for them to sit in, I had another purpose in mind but they r spare now

    Attachment 120392Attachment 120393Attachment 120394

with the wider roller it offers more support to the board being cut

    infeed side long view.jpg
After looking at this for most of today I'm thinking I am gonna do something different for the greater good of course

OK - how did you change the speed? Was it a pulley change?
120mm drive pulley from memory, not as great a speed change as original but it is faster overall
    pulley on moter.jpg

had to do a bit of work to the adjuster slot and motor shaft slot
