Disposal of old wide bandsaw blades
Has anyone discovered a use for old bandsaw blades. Mine are 9 inches wide and 9.1m long. Surely they must be good for something other than scrap metal.

Scrapers?

As they have said above, the steel is great for knives, if you decide to cut them up I will be interested in some - a friend of mine has started building a forge and they would be good to try out making pattern or Damascus steel billets.
I have used old saw mill blades - the real big ones - 3 feet or more in diameter to make knives and the older ones are great steel, they are getting hard to get now unfortunately

There are a LOT of would be knife makers out there who would jump at the chance to get some of that steel - the problem is going to be getting a 9 metre long bandsaw blade from Dorrigo to almost anywhere for a reasonable price.
If you have an oxy set or a cut off grinder - probably used for blade maintainance - you could cut one into 900mm lengths, weigh a length & see what Oz Post charge to deliver it( they won't take parcels over 1000mm). I'd guess that you could sell at least 9 lengths on these forums, plus there is EBay. I know there is a magazine/newsletter thing printed in W.A. for knife making enthusiasts - I can ask a mate what the details are if you want to make a side line of it & advertise.

Hmm! Pity I didn't talk to you guys earlier. I've sent 6 for scrap metal but there's another 6 I could cut up. I would appreciate the details of the WA magazine and I'll get some orgainsed for this forum. Watch this space. Thanks for the advice.

Hello Stopper , those are serious blades .
What is the wheel diameter and blade thickness ? Do they have gullet cracking ? It might affect their usefulness as knife blade material .

Sibbo, Wheels are 4ft diameter and blades are 16g and yes they do have gullet cracking. I have moved to 17g saws which seem to handle it better.

Gauges
16 Gauge--1.5mm. 17 Gauge--1.36mm. 18 Gauge--1.2mm .
Hi Stopper , the rule of thumb ,as I understand it ,is that the blade should be 1000th of the wheel diameter . ie for a 1200 mm (4 foot ) wheel ,a 1.2mm blade is ideal .Thicker is OK ,but they will crack .. .Blade strain plays a part but it's beyond me .You probably know all this ,forgive me , if you do !
cheers ,
Sibbo .
edited to add , I have a mate with a big horizontal ,he runs very thick blades on 36" wheels to increase stiffness .He was breaking lots of blades to start with but these days has a brake on the mill .He stops the wheels when not cutting ...which is a lot of time , loading logs etc . It has helped a lot in the length of time the blades last . .Last edited by Sibbo; 7th September 2008 at 09:26 PM. Reason: forgot something .

A piece of flexible steel that has a good straight edge and will not bow sideways would be really handy for use as a straight edge that will conform to slightly irregular surfaces. If you can fix a handle to it somewhere so you can hold it steady it would make a great tool for marking-out on wavy surfaces. If you can cut the band so that it can be coiled up you could package them up fairly easily. I think I just talked myself into buying a couple of Metres!
Have you got a "Fastway" courier up there? We find them quite reasonable in their charges and they take all the stuff that OZ Post shake their heads at, including pressure packs which are clasified as "dangerous goods".
Better give me a quote for delivery to Port Macquarie please.
Dennis.

Thanks for the info sibbo. I stop my blade between cuts as well to reduce metal fatigue. I haven't had any problems since I switched to 17g. The 1000th rule is news and sounds like it would be pretty close to what works in practice.
Weisyboy and Denice, I just have to get my act together and cut some up. Yes, I have fastways tickets. I will send you a pm when I've got my act together.
Regards
Steve

No rush, just thought I had better put my order in before evryone else gets theirs in! Work and bills come before pleasure and other things so best if you keep earning the money while you can.
Have a good week!
