Make sure we get a WIP.

    Hi all,
Just thought i would send more WIP pics on small redgum. log has now been milled into decorative fence post and rails. we had to raise the mill 12" of the ground at one end to make log fit under carrige, unfortunately it had a large crack on one side and a hollow of about 12" close to the stump end which ment that we lost a large portion into firewood.

    Quite a challenge Metricky,

Did you find any fiddleback in that log? Box makers and turners love that stuff even in small lengths that some people would burn!

When you get a chance, post some pics of your fence please!

    Regards,

    Chipman

Hi Chipman, this log i believe had no fiddleback ( i call fiddleback as small crimp in the wood resembling wool crimp.) The log did have a pattern i have heard called angle wings. i have some of the smaller pieces stacked away will get photos and post in coming days.

    Thanks,

I got lucky with redgum today...courtesy of my father in law's wood pile. As he is burning his firewood the pile was getting down, so as he was rearranging his wood shed he discovered some big slabs of redgum..I have just got back with the first one 600mm square by 175mm thick....no splits and only one gum vein. Massive lump without cracks...It was from the outside to the centre so the tree must have been about 4 feet across... a mere tidler by your standards!. He said it is 30 years since he cut it so it should be absolutely ideal for bowl turning or slicing it up for clocks etc.

I am really looking forward to planning a project to make the most of its features.

    Cheers,

    Chipman
