Cool
Cool,
When you finish the log - drag that last bit out the way.
When you cap the next one flat - stop milling - wind the height up 50- 60 millimeters & place that half round cap from the previous log in on top of the one you milling now - flat side down, and cut right across to leave you a nice natural edge slab for making coffee tables.
Thus.
You can leave them all till the last log and just take your slabs at the end on top of the last log if you want.
Flip em over so they don't sun check.
Cheers

Know the feeling. I just love being out working (sorry) .... playing with my 8/30. Have you got the cd from lucas? I'm guessing you would have. It shows how to turn the mill on the log to cut up one side and then down the other side to get a (in your case) a 20" slab/board. Slows things down a bit but well worth a try as well. Enjoy!

Have cut up my first 7 logs. Some fairly big in size. One was in pretty bad shape but milled it anyway for the experience. There is some good stuff in there but I think knowing what I know now, just a waste of time. Anyway, Have tucked the mill away for the time being. Will set it up again in a day or two. I've got 2 10 x 10 posts so far and will get the other 8 from another pile of logs. All smaller in size but will get me posts out of them. I still need lots of timber for the flooring. One pick shows 2 posts and one beam the other pic shows the timber for the floor boards. The will in turn be put through a thicknesser and edges routered round ready for floor.

Artme, gave me the laugh of the day! That thong was put that there for sizing only. I wear steel toed boots when I mill. Along with ear muffs and eye protection. Already planning for more milling as I just checked the local weather forcast. Clear for the next week. Love my Lucas Mill!!

So envious!
Where are you getting the logs from?
Can you buy an entire log from a local or a forrestry place?

Hi Evanism,
The logs I'm milling atm are from my place. Trees felled from clearing 7 or 8 years ago and about 15 more from clearing an area for my new shed. As I live 'out bush' everyone around hear has trees. Since I started milling (only a week ago) lots of locals have approached me to cut logs. As for attaining logs from somewhere else, I'm not the person to ask, too new-bie! Good luck
