Bunya pines
Hi there,
I'm not a miller, but I was in the Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane the other day and came across a group of logs, (5?, 6?) mostly Bunya I think and maybe a Hoop from memory. They have been pruned of branches and just left to one side of the road. I assume they came down in a storm and were too big for the arborists to do anything with. Sad to say, but they look like they would have blue stain through them, but one of them must be more than 1200mm across and 8m of straight log. All of them are of a healthy size though and there must be cubes and cubes of stuff there.
If they were good for anything (surely something) I'm pretty sure the cemetery/council would love some one to take them off their hands.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.
Berlin...I'll just make the other bits smaller.

Berlin
I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this yet.
However there may be a few problems. Many of our forum millers with their portable mills would cut in situ. This may not be appropriate in a cemetary or even permissable. This would mean removal. Large logs may require big lifting devices and trucks for removal.
Having said that, and in case it gives anybody ideas, I have seen spectacular slab tables and chairs made in the rustic style from Bunya Pine. Cut into 2.4m or 3m lengths it might be manageable for some.
I am not an expert on blue stain but I think it is primarily limited to the sapwood and turners prize it for the spalting effect for their bowls.
Hopefully somebody will see some value in this timber. Thanks for drawing our attention to it.

Could be there waiting for the truck. Certainly check with cemetery before lifting any

Hi Paul,
I'm glad to here that there may be some use for these trees. I don't doubt there would be one or two council hoops to jump through before you could roll up with a slabbing mill. On the plus side though, the logs are on a low piece of land beside a creek/drain in a part of the cemetery that has no grave plots anywhere nearby. There would be good access for machinery without any fear of waking the dead.
I was walking through the cemetery mid-day, mid week, sketching some trees and in the several hours I was there, I saw two people and both of them were on ride on mowers wearing ear muffs so I can't imagine disturbing the peace is too much of a problem.
Next time I'm over that way I'll take a photo of the logs to help whet some appetites.
Matt...I'll just make the other bits smaller.
