    Default Small Burdekin Plum

A mate cut this down the other week, so me being me said I'll have it, picked it up yesterday, ahhh the joy of the crane, had to cut all the branch bits off before it would go under the saw frame, here's a few pics
    a small Burdekin Plum.JPGfirst slice.JPGdown the middle.JPGinside.JPGcloseup roller.JPG

I was hoping it would have more crotch figure than what it does maybe it's too small, Ill continue cutting it up for veneers, 3mm thick or so.

Some time back I made up some offside rollers to catch the offcut, they work well and I can set them high or low for sled use or table use.

Started cutting veneers but then ran into a nail
    veneers cut so far.JPGcloseup hitting a nail.JPGoffending metal.JPGstack off veneers.JPG

The effect on the cut surface can clearly be seen after the nail, the offending bit of metal stuck to the tooth, if you look carefully I think it is possible to pick out the hard metal tip and a stack of veneer slices

Nice but of wood and shame about the nail. What TPI and width blade are you using there?

    Nice!! Lucky you!!

I've not seen much Burdekin Plum. David Drescher had a nice slab for sale some years back but at that time I had

two things against a purchase : no money, no use!!

It's the 19", from memory the 21" has a wider blade to upright distance and bigger wheels, at the time I didn't think it was worth the extra $, probably would have been better tho

    Hi Pete,

I have the 21 inch carbatec saw. I went for it because it has the 3hp 15 amp motor and a 300mm depth of cut, same as the 19' saw depth of cut but with a more powerful motor. Well, I can count 17 teeth between the blade guides and the table on your 1tpi blade. thats a depth of cut of at least 16 inches. I think it was you who posted something about remounting the upper blade guide higher in the upper saw body. I have the cast iron table removed from my saw currently as I construct my bandsaw mill, and even with the table off I cant see a 16 inch depth of cut, even if I put the upper guides right up inside the upper cabinet of the saw. Pete, am I missing something?

    Any help appreciated,

    Doug

I can get 405mm no worries and if I let the rack pop out of it's track I can get 410mm from table to the lowest obstacle, head of a cap screw, your 16" is pretty close, from memory the original blade guard was a sliding arrangement with a depth pointer, that all came off as it consumed usable hieght plus a few other brackets, that allowed me to get right up to the housing, that's the practicle limit.

I work in the flat, I don't turn so a log this size is a bit small to get any boards out of although not impossible, I reckon I get better value if I slice it into veneers, and if I have a variety of timber types in veneers I can be a bit creative with patterns/effects when I do a table top, draw fronts or door panels or such, like this
    closeup BH Sassafrass.JPG
Some BH Sassafrass draw fronts that have a slip match pattern, the slices came from a small offcut that falls into the too good to chuck but What can I do with it? category, I like to utilize as much as possible so that ethos drives me to be creative with small size logs/offcuts, well that's my current thinking
The boxes above the draws have three narrow pieces (Black Wattle) on the fronts to make up the width, hard to see it tho, might actually be four on the right box

Nicely done Pete. I was wondering about the veneer thing myself. All is clear now .
