    Default Burl Musk

I cut this bit of burl Musk log into slabs today for drying. The best burl grain though, comes from the large burl that develops at the base of the trunk which I cut into veneers on my band saw while wet and dried it inside near the fire. It seems to have worked pretty good and I will post some pics of the veneer when I use it on some boxes soon. The grain in the veneers is pretty awesome. Burl Musk is my favorite.

Looks very interesting. Looks as though it was a decent size burl too. What dimensions are we looking at?

The log section was only small. The largest of the pieces in the photos is about 450mm w x 750 long. The main burl section that I cut the veneers from was quite large, about 900mm diameter and about 250 kg +. Unfortunately there was quite a bit of rot in the center.

    thats spectacular timber TasSculptor,
You call it Musk? is this what we call the Musk Daisy bush (oleria argophylla)?
we have it growing here but its quite small, too small to mill but a very beautiful plant, perhaps I should keep my eye out for any larger bits in the bush

    cheers,
    Dean.

I assume the photos are before you sliced it.

No,thats a couple of blocks I veneered so I could see what it would look like. Some of the veneer has even more figure and colours.

What size bandsaw do you have for those dimensions? Just looking at my puny 3/4HP Carbatec bandsaw, and thinking to myself, that I need a bigger bandsaw.

I just have a 14 inch carbatec. I would love a big bandsaw but at the moment I cut it into manageable sizes with the chainsaw and then slice the veneers on the bandsaw. As I generally just make boxes I find I can live with the size limitations for now.
