Carl if you are bending your hooks you need to stop using mild steel. mild steel bends like a stick of licorice. If you were to use something like 5160 or even 1045 for the hook then harden and temper it properly it will never straighten. Steam pipe would be the goods for the handle and if you found there was a chance of bending it, a bit of wood neatly fitted inside the pipe will stop that. Made a lifter to lift machinery in crates so that you can get them out of shipping containers recently, will lift a 5 tonne machine high enough to get the drag hooks under with no fear of bending, and we have had 3 burly guys hanging off the end of it

havent bent a blade scince i went to using 12mm plate and cutting them 40-50mm wide
handles are what we have been bending. mainly at the pivot point but i have fixed that now by making the bit tht gets all the forde from 50 x 50 5mm wall instead of 2 layers of pipe.
the new ones i can hook the ute on and not bend them if i put it in 4wd i probly could but that would eb a #### load of weight.

This is the kind of bend I am experiencing...
obviously in the beginning the pipe was straight. I've not had problems with my hook either, she is made from 150x10mm flat bar and was trimmed out with and oxy, then I cleaned it up with an angle grinder. Have lost a bolt in it's 6 year use, but 1 bolt in 6 years isn't too much to handle. The pipe is my problem and I don't wanna make it much heavier, so maybe a fillet of timber inside might be the best option rather than thicker sidewall pipe???I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Why not strengthen the pipe with a 450mm piece of 50mm x 12mm flat bar welded on the back of the pipe where the bend is? This would strengthen the pipe in the area of maximum stress and not add all that much weight to the whole thing.

here is my prototype.
i have been using this hook shape for 12 months or more.
the new hooks will have a nice even profile this one i hacked out with the oxy.
dogs on the end of the handle to stop slippage, and to top of the handle is plugged to avoid injury.
total weight comes in at 9kg not to bad really.
handles will be red or blue when im done.

Mark, I'm actually thinking of trying to convince Lucas to make me a blue Lucas. I like green because it is the colour used on Lucas mills, but my favorite colour is really blue.
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

You should have joined the RAAF instead of the Army.
Carl, what I'd quite like is a pair of log tongs for moving these plurry great boards I'm doing. I'm working by myself at the moment and 6m long ironbark 200 x 75s are not an easy shift, but they'd be easy if they could be just snigged out ready for the fork. The thought is father to the deed, they say, so I'd best get on it.Cheers,
Craig
