DJ you only want better pics so you can copy the hook yaself I reckon the geometry of the hook should be able to be patented as the thing is bloody useless unless you get it right and it takes a fair bit of trial and error to get the hook to work just right
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

I already have a Logrite peavey and skidding tongs here that work really well. I am looking at buying more, but unless I can see or hear better reports, I'll continue to buy from a reputable dealer who will and has to date replaced with no questions asked if we bend any, so I'll be sticking with my dealer as he has proved himself, whereas Carl is expecting us to buy hooks off his say so, that he says will do the job.
Cheers

I'm sure Carl will do so, but I cannot fully commit to coming up at this stage as I found out today that I could be expecting a 25 ton excavator to land on my doorstep in the next week or so and if it does, I need to be here to operate it to clear up the road reserve next to my block for the cost of the diesel otherwise I will have to pay to have it floated back here and pay hourly costs to use it.
Cheers

I take your point about the quality/backup, DJ. Nonetheless, I think I'll get Carl to drop a couple around next time he's in my area. If they're up to scratch, they'll be really useful and save me the effort of making them myself, which was the other option. If they're good, i'll get a second set. I reckon one for each fork on the forkie could be handy and the biggest time consumer when lifting with the crane truck is slinging up the load.
I've got an idea for a mod for them for use on the fork. I'll try it out and see if it works before I say anything though. After my balls-up with the price of Lucas blades I'm keeping my mouth shut if I haven't checked things myself in future.
So Carl, when are you going to be around my way next?Cheers,
Craig

i will get better pics up my camera is in teh repair shop. it wasnt quite as drop proof as they made out.
wont get it back till friday. theyv had it for 2 weeks now and friday will be 3.
craig i drive past your yard about 3 times a week. ill be away on a job this week so ill drop them in over teh weekend or next week.
the hooks are cut from 12mm plate and the tips have been hardened.
the holes were also cut witht eh laser cutter. they could do with another hole closer to the end for use as tongs but ill just drill that in to them before i send them out.
im getting them tested to see what teh bending strength of the hooks is but i can hook the tongs onto a tree and hook the tractor to them and shee dont go noware.

craig, if you figure a good way of using them with the crane,i'd love to see it.i'd wouldn't mind a grapple on my crane but can't justify the expense

Thanks Carl.
Charlsie, I'll keep you posted. I was thinking abiout adding a latch inside the pivot to hold them open, which would be released by coming into contact with the top of the log. I'll have a play with it in a week or so when i get some time.
I also have a two-leg chain sling which it would be nice to have two sets for - one at each end of the log.Cheers,
Craig

Looks good Carl!
A couple of things to think about
One problem with the through cant hook design is the amount of turn the hook can make can be limited by the length of the slot which in turn means the hook may not bite properly into the log. Of course this can be compensated for by increasing the length of slot and/or length of hook. Increasing the hook length increases leverage and places a significant greater load on the joint. Opening up the slot also weakens the joint. This is why cant hook manufacturers mainly sell fixed hooks of different lengths rather than the adjustable type.
All this means the joint needs to be strong enough to hold a persons weight (I's say at least up to 120 kg) at full hook length since this is what users will do with them.
Like this (Please wear long shorts )
Have you also thought also about what happens if you sell one and it breaks and someone injures themselves? This is one reason I will not make one for anyone else.
