The other potential effect is that as forest gets locked up for carbon it will reduce the amount of forest available for harvesting. For a grower it means potentially a higher price per cube and therefore more reasons to get a small scale operation on property rather than getting the big guys in and getting paid only on royalty.
Looking at the current strategy for a carbon price I'm not optimistic we'll get clever incentives for things like urban recovery, restorative forestry etc... more likely there will be broadscale options to lock forests up and leave them alone - there is very little data to support it but to my thinking a healthy well managed forest/plantation with a sensible amount of harvesting has the potential to store much more carbon than a clumsy unthinned plantation or a forest struggling to recover from overharvesting.

I don't think it would be much use to run a Kohler 27 on a mill, but if you were to run a decent generator and use an electric motor that would be a different story. Heating is the icing on the cake, since there's a fair amount of loss in the system due to low-grade heat being wasted. Couple the gasifier to a Stirling cycle engine and use it to drive a refrigeration compressor and you can get back perhaps 80% of the losses. You can also use the hot side to pre-heat your feedstock and add to the efficiency.
There's lots of good ideas, but as always it comes down to time and money.Cheers,
Craig

I did receive a $1500 Federal tax rebate for installing a high efficiency wood boiler. Not sure if that is still out there but that was nice for 2010.

Steve
Looks like you were right on the money with your statement. My daughter was working in the carbon credits arena for a short while and she has put me straight on this one .
She did go on to say there is a government site which outlines the schemes that are available, but she couldn't recall the site details off the top of her head and I haven't been successful locating it yet. Will post details if I turn it up.
