    Default Chainsaw Size for Docking

I have been managing with my 2050 Jonsered with a 24 inch bar and skip tooth chain on it for a fair while now and am increasingly finding I need a bigger saw. I find I can cut an 800mm diameter log with this setup but it is usually a bit of a struggle.

I am not looking to cut rounds for firewood all day with speed but being able to dock a log up to 1200mm on occasion with relative ease would be nice. As this won't happen often I don't need an 880 with a 1200mm bar but something a little more cost effective.

What combinations (saw and bar length) are others using to dock their logs and what size log are they comfortabley able to do with the combination?

I would like to buy just once and get it right so your experiences are appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    AS a minimum I'd go for a 70-80 cc saw with a 28-30" bar.

Mike, I've used my 372 XP with 24" bar for about 4-5 years. Been happy as hell with the saw and can't recall an instance where I've wanted a bigger bar... Maybe our logs over here don't grow as big as yours?? I was told by the tree lopper who recommended it, I could chuck a 30" bar on it but would be forever hitting the dirt... been really happy with it.

have had a stihl 034av for ever will pull a 25"bar no trouble. never really needed a bigger saw.

now i use a husky 3120xp 120cc of joy. just pull the trigger and sit it on the log and it falls threw. got both a 30" and 42" bar for it. first time i used it i docked 1m+ bluegum didnt even need to help it threw.

would never buy one it is a peice of ####. buy a stihl 880 if you want one that big and belive me you do.

    I don't get it

How come a "peice of ####" in para 3 = "120cc of joy" that "falls threw" in para 2?

You must get your joys in funny ways Carl

Thanks guys, keep the posts coming, I am thinking Jonsered 2186, Husqvarna 385 or Stihl 660 all with 32 inch bar. If new It will probably be a 2186 as they are heaps cheaper. I would probably go down to around 70cc if I found a good second hand one at the right price.

Thanks Bob, I may just do that, mind you I am an impulsive bugger and tend to not learn from previous lessons with buying used machinery - that is why Erin put her foot down and told me I had to buy a new Lucas......bummer eh

    Default saw size

I just have a ms250 with 18" bar...it does everything I need it to do for trimming logs ready for slabbing, if I was to be a bit more serious about felling or cutting an end off from one side only a bigger one might be considered

    Default Saw size

Personally I have never needed anymore bar length than 25" to dock logs out to 1200 round. Extra horsepower is handy but not needed. What Ive learned Mike is its in how you go about it. I always start into a log standing on it and cut across it with the saw pointing down for as far as I can and then jump off and cut down through one side. That then leaves about 1/4 of the log to cut, jump over the other side and finish the cut And just to let you know I MIGHT have 2 660s up for sale soon. One of them just sits in the shed and my daily drive is still in good nic but I dont need 2 saws as im not an octopus.

I hear what you are saying with the smaller bar Nev and with a regular chain and extra horses it would be a lot more manageable but the 50cc Jonsered does struggle when the bar is buried full depth in a gummy marri, so the time has come I think. Have PM'd you about the 660 possibility.
