Default First cuts with new bandsaw mill

Attached are some photos from our first test cuts with a second hand bandsaw mill that me and my mate recently went halves in. We have been doing some chainsaw milling but have been keen for something a bit quicker so jumped at this one when it came up relatively nearby. Its a chinese mill that has been upgraded with a 14hp Kohler motor. It will cut a 500 x 500 cant and came with 6m of bed. We installed it on a dedicated concrete slab that is long enough to allow for a future bed extension that will enable us to cut 5m long structural timbers.

We put a candlebark log on it to test it out that was 600mm diameter x 3m long. Each cut took a little over one minute to do which is a significant improvement on the 10 or 12 mins it would have taken with my chainsaw mill. We put the blade into the log stop before we could do a second log which was a shame but all part of the learning process.

The property has candlebark, stringybark, brittle gum, ribbon gum, narrowleaf peppermint and a small amount of red box on it. We are going to return soon armed with several sharp blades and cut slabs from each of these species to do a big comparison with. ( milling and dried).

I would be keen on advice re what sort of blade people reccomend for this sort of work. Plain carbon, bi metal or carbide?

Those stickers are way too far in from the ends.

Agree, the stickers also need to be aligned vertically, especially those on the bottom of the stack.

Given the hardness of what you are cutting I would go at least for bimetal.
Are you planning to sharpen you own blades.

It will be interesting to see what cutting times you get after cutting a couple of dry logs.

I would have put more stickers in appears to be quite a gap between some of those stickers.

Thanks for the tips re stickers - We will go back and add more on the weekend. How far in from the end should they be? Like 100mm or so?

The end stickers should be as close to the end as possible. Preferably right at the end of the boards to help stop rapid moisture loss which causes end splitting. Stickers should be no more than 600mm apart for 50mm thick material and reduced to 450mm spacing for thinner boards. Keep stickers aligned vertically to prevent wave in the boards.
This is not the best time of year to be drying so place stacks in a shady location

call Henry Bros.. I am using woodmaster B blades from HBS on our little mill. They seem to work great & I have resharpened up to 6 times with no problems.

Seeing as you are local to me, Id love to come have a look at your setup.

PM me if you are interested
