I don't think you can really compare a 16 year old 088 Magnum with a new MS 880. The 088 will eat it, all the emission control stuff really hurt Stihls pro saw range. Personally I consider the 395 to be the practical equivalent of an 076 power wise...with half the weight. A ported 66 might be almost...almost... as good as a stock 395, but a MS660 is best left home when there's real work to do.

A lot of people are fooled by the way the 088 revs higher than the 880 but what matters is they both develop the same HP and torque at working revs, ie in the cut.

    The only differences are
    - a narrower exhaust exit to meet noise requirements, which can be easily be enlarged.
    - limiting caps on the carby screws (which can be removed in 30s) to stop eejets from getting a bit fancy with tuning - pity the eedjets know how to do that to.
    - rev limiter - doesn't make a any difference in the cut which is a couple of thou RPM below that limit. The 076 also had a rev limiter which could be defeated with a piece of Alfoil at your own risk.
For CS racing a rev limiter is a PITA, but for milling and regular cutting its useful protection that most people would rather have than not.

Personally I consider the 395 to be the practical equivalent of an 076 power wise...with half the weight. A ported 66 might be almost...almost... as good as a stock 395, but a MS660 is best left home when there's real work to do.
The 076 is a very different beast from the 395, with the former being a much lower revving but torquier saw. I really like the 076 for milling with it's downward facing exhaust that doesn't bounce off the log into your face like the newer saws do.

This what I did to my 880 to get around that exhaust problem when milling.

This is how it looks on the mill with the clutch cover mod - it blows the sawdust away from the saw and operator so the sawdust doesn't build up under the operators feet.

076's were the default setting here for a looooong time. I cannibalised for parts until the last of mine died three years back, whereupon I purchased the first of my 395XPW's ex the USA, and liked it that much I promptly ordered another. I don't mill with mine... felling saws only though I'll rip a few fenceposts out occasionally.

Don't know about now but at that time it was still possible to get a new 076 off the shelf ex PNG. I'm glad I didn't, I still have one old 056 to remind me of just what a good day at the office these new things are.

Great mods to the saw BobL!!!

    Cheers JG.

076s are still made in countries like Brazil and Mexico and exported to third world countries with no EPA requirements.

The first of those pics poste don May 6th is a jarrah, unfortunately it was not as good inside as we'd hoped.

The log rails are HD unistrut an at each end of the log there is an angle iron clamp that looks like this.
The angle is locked to the unistrut with T-bolds and to the log with 3/8" bolts with ground pointy ends that bit into the wood

On the second picture with the ladder a similar arrangement is used.
