Eucalyptus deglupta, Kamarere Wood
Not sure which forum to post this in, so thought I'd try here.
)
I'm on Big Island Hawaii and will be cutting & milling some Eucalyptus deglupta/Rainbow Eucalyptus and wondered about finishing quarter sawn lumber, also known as Kamarere wood.
Anyone familiar with working with Kamarere wood or know where I might find some info about it?
I understand finishing quartersawn wood can have some issues planing & sanding, but don't know any details.

In my experience quartersawn wood is better in just about every way. I haven't experienced any problems planing, sanding, or finishing it.
You sometimes get better grain patterning in flatsawn wood, but that's the only advantage I can think of.
I've never heard the term Kamarere.
Someone else might have better insight into this.

Eucalyptus deglupta is one of the unusual Eucalypts that actually doesn't come from Australia. Some detail here: http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/science/pr...yptus-deglupta
Gorgeous bark apparently. Have no idea how it mills but assume similar to other Eucalypts and perhaps other millers here can give more detail.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Aloha,
I have been cutting some E. deglupta, mostly as utility wood, and find the flat-sawn has more interesting grain. Heart wood variable from light-brown to chocolate streaks. Machines easy, similar weight and hardness to doug fir. Stuff is bug food; treat it quick or it will all be frass.

It mightn't come from Australia but driving through plantations of E. deglupta in near Honokaa sandwiched between the taro down in Waipi'o and palm trees along the Mamalahoa Highway is totally weird, like for a moment you're back home and have to keep an eye out for kangaroos.
