The trees have a lean, that's obvious, and Weisy was posting on what he did whilst dropping the tree to counter that.

as promised some pics of a leaner for you fellows to work it out for yourselves if thats at all possible,
exador, I'll just read the pictures supplied & the latest explaination of "all from the front", as far the rotation aspect of the tree pictures there are some people here who could work that out quite quickly & accurately, make the call & watch a lot of people duck for cover, I like the irrelevant photos you have supplied.
Anybody posting something disputable & then taking their bat & ball home when challenged on the evidence is very revealing, you can have a beer with them all day anyday if you like
pic 1 from 90 degrees to lean
pic 2 in line of lean
pic 3 this tree has a lot of lean, 5 degrees would be even dangerous to jack over

Let's calm it down.
What is the problem?
Ok, so the maths were out.
Nobody is disputing that fact, (if it were pointed out in a reasonable manner even weissyboy would admit his mistake I am sure). It is obvious that weissyboy was not trying to bignote himself by exageration as he actually referenced his claim back to a mathematical solution, flawed though it was. Every one of us have made honest mistakes I am sure.
Since when was open season declared on weissyboy? It seems that he cannot breathe without being taken to task.
What I and I suspect many others find offensive is the sarcastic manner in which so many of these replies are worded. Are we not all mates here with a common interest.
Perhaps weissyboy removed himself from the debate lest we have another thread shut down by unnacceptable behaviour as happened only recently.
I don't wish to single anyone out here, but it sems that one person is doing a pretty good job of standing out all on their own.

Can't agree more Karl, I strike this all the time on the road listening to the UHF....someone make a comment and all the Dingo's chime in with the usual crap...real hero's behind a mike but when challenged to put up or shut up....disappear like the proverbial.

Owwwwwww, Owww, Owww, OOwwwwwwwwwwwwww........
This is splitting hairs, and maybe you were trying to do this, but to get the correct angle the protractor has to be aligned with the mid-line of the tree and not the side of the tree. This is hard to do in practice because the protractor sometimes blots out one side of the tree.
Based on the photo and and assuming the level was level, from the mid line of the tree in photoshop I get . . . 7.7º

Come on guys does it realy mater about the acuracy of the angle. The fact is there was an angle and the mesurement of this angle is fairly negligable other than to say it was reasonable enough to have to wedge it and jack it with a 20 ton jack. there was obviously an angle, how much well does it realy matter. shorly we don't need to be that pedantic?

Karl
Thank you for sharing your experience and ideas. To a novice like me they are great lessons. I appreciate the time and effort you have made in putting the reports together.
Please keep them coming.
take care

Jack blew its' seal
Have had cause to use a jack myself from time to time and for those of you thinking about doing this at home make sure you combine the the jack with wedges. Work them together.
I put an extension handle on the jack and blew the seals or o ring or whaterver it is that keeps up the pressure. The only thing that stopped the tree comming back was the wedges. I didn't have a ute with a winch rope.

A Tirfor is a better option then a jack as well as a complementary item and for the $300 it has saved me a lot of time and made me a lot of money.
If you want a real Jack to fell a tree i suggest you check this out John White Using Tree Jacks
