Default Getting the best of FOG wood

I am not very well equiped to get the best of the timber I come across having only a chainsaw. Scored a beaut Black Morrel log a while ago and am wasting a lot trying to cut sections into blanks - it is really hard wood. I am considering a Granberg small log mill - $275 - to cut logs down to blank thickness. Alternatively a big circular rip saw might do the job if I could find one.

What do you good people do to turn logs into blanks and are there any recommendations for or against chainsaw mills or circular saws?

    Question

How far are you from BobL? He is your best source of information in WA.

Apart from that he is a top bloke!

I'm happy to be corrected by BobL on this one but if I was cutting a lot of blanks free hand I wood look at getting a skip tooth chain made up for a bigger chainsaw (20 inch bar) Might be a bit slower but SHOULD (hopefully) be a bit straighter.

Thanks Darren - I'll try that first, it certainly would be the cheapest option and all I really need at the moment.

I too am happy to be corrected by BobL, but in the past I have been advised that skip tooth chain is not worthwhile under a 26" bar. Obviously that also needs a good size saw to drive it. If you are only looking to cut blanks for turning I would be inclined to cut freehand. If you are struggling with the cutting (ripping is harder going) check your sharpening.

You didn't say what size the Black Morrel log was (and I know nothing about this timber), but I would look at making ripping cuts at the end of the log and then docking to form your blanks. You might only be cutting 200mm to 300mm at a time. The principle would be to drop four blanks and the heart off at one hit. Do your crossing cutting to suit the width of the timber you have just ripped. Then repeat the process until your log is too small to cut safely with the saw.

You are right Paul. Saw my local chainsaw man today & he said that I would struggle to get one for my size saw anyway. He gave me a lead on a large circular saw which ( if I can get it) would suit my needs. Fingers crossed.

I should have qualified that I meant 20inch as a minimum. Come on where are you BobL with the solution to Bruce's problem? Ps Bruce give me a holler next time your up in the big smoke.
