8th November 2009, 07:29 PM #20You mean you wouldn't like to give it a go Carl? 3000 year old sequoia, big bar on an 086
Apparently in the past some were felled for slabbing but their great height and weight meant that they shattered badly on hitting the ground.
so Allan when do we put in the order to Lucas.
i can imagine teh phone call now.
"im chasing a big mobile sawmill"
"no problem how big"
"i has to be able to cut a log 8m wide and 100m long."
"what!!!!!!"

We're both right but we're not talking the exact same thing.
I'm talking "Technical diameter" and you're talking "Diameter at base".
Diameter is technically defined at a height of 1.4 m from the highest point of the ground around the tree.
Sherman is 11 m at base, and 7.7 m at 1.4 m above the ground.
Grant is 10.4 m at base but 8.8 m at 1.4 m above the ground.
I also gave the Tingle diameter at base - but it's only ~5 m in diameter 1.5 m above the base.
Here's my reference

I reckon they'd put one together if someone had enough availability of such a resource.
Imagine pulling out 10x2's until ya arms ached..... (Sigidi goes off into a moment, just thinking of the joy, driving a 10-30 over 5m wide logs.....hmmmmm......little bit of drool escapes out the corner of his mouth.....)
The concept of a Lucas would be easy enough to adapt so as to accommodate the size log, what do you reckon? The carriage frame would need to be built so it would span the width without flexing, but I reckon it could be done???I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Allan.
There is a big old Rosewood growing not far from me and he is 9.6 mts around the butt at eye height.
Bugger the redwood, i would be happy if the Lucas boys could knock up something big enough to take him on.
Cheers.
Rob.
PS = you are right though, with the correct engineering it would be possible to build something.

A WillMill is one way of tackling those super huge logs some of which cannot even be hauled to a mill.

Bob.
Looks time consuming, but proof in the pictures, appears to do the job alright.
Pretty simple setup when you look at it.
Cheers.
