OOOH, AAAAGH!
so after a bit of juggling things looked like this...
.
.
.
.
After I got home and parked my truck right out the front, things got so bright from the afternoon sun on all the new shiny bits, Wifey was getting sun burnt on the verandah, so I had to do this...
Okay, so some of you are thinking, he must have known it was comin? Well to tell the truth I did know it was coming, although TNT had told me it was due here tomorrow, so I was super excited it turned up today - gives me a whole day extra to get to know her/him dunno what I'm gonna name it yet. Donkey is my Daihatsu truck, Harry is my Husqvarna CS, Larry is my 6-18, so anyone got ideas for a name for my 10-30?
Oh before I go;
I love my Lucas's!!

Neil, I'm liking the idea of Harry, Larry and MO the timber cutters....hmmm will think about it.
Anyone else got some name suggestions for the 10-30?
I Finally got to start putting bits together tonight ended up only managing to do it just on dark, so after a bit of 'where there's a will there's a way' I got the carriage onto part of the new front verandah;
So I did things like attach the side shift winder handle, the swing over handle, fill the battery with acid, secure it and attach the leads, check engine oil, check gearbox oil, attach the carriage brake, the 'T' bar for the set works, the air filter and cover... scratch my head for way too long trying to figure out where the DanG throttle lever was... .
Yeah I know, I have to dob myself in and admit; with it being a new machine and never touching one before, I didn't want to break anything and had no friggin idea the "emergency brake" was the throttle control lever - what a total 6-year-of-Lucas-milling-experience NOOB I felt If you look closely in the second pic, you can see I even had the bloody manual out!!! I reckon Carl is going to be shocked!!
So I've already come across some differences between my two machines which I'm very pleased about. The one I like the most (for now; I reserve the right to have more most favorite differences as I get to play more)
the gearbox has a little dipstick to make checking the gear oil much easier and quicker - something I feel will encourage owners to maintain the gearbox better than before.
Also on the carriage brake, the bottom 13mm bolt (not the best pic, but most of the Lucas folks would know this bolt)
is held into the battery tray, so you don't have to try and clear out all the sawdust between the battery and the bolt head, then try and get a second 13mm spanner on the end of it to stop it turning while you have another 13mm spanner on the nut trying to loosen it to adjust the carriage brake - again, I think it will lead to the carriage brake being greased more often and being maintained better.
Something I am definitely going to need to get used to is the swing over handle - when the blade is in the vertical position the handle drops in behind the catch bolt, then as you are used to the other machine you go to flip the blade back to horizontal and it's blocked!! I freaked!! thought I'd bloody broken something!! but no, no problems, nothing broken, just have to get used to easing the swing over handle toward the operator slightly and then flipping the blade over. Phew!!
I'm definitely going to enjoy re-educating my milling 'flow'... just hope the fear/terror/thoughts of "did I break something?!" will subside...I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!
Allan.

Allan, any chance if you leave them both outside of a night they might breed??
Was this payment for all the free advertising/promotion/headbanging you have been doing here for LUCAS for the past years.
Cheers and enjoy - if there's one bloke who deserves it it is you.regards
David

Hey Dave, I wish they would breed, what do you reckon I'd get from a 6-18 slabbing mill and a 10-30 swingblade... an 8-24 swingblade slabber
Payments - you very funny man! I know I go on a bit and Carl tries to warn people not to ring me - unless they have all afternoon to 'chat' but I love sawmilling and I reckon Lucas have made a terrific bit of gear. I'm the kind of guy who tells people about something I think is good. Fella stopped me at our local corner store the other month, saw I had a Lucas, wanted to know if I could slab. He owned a Lucas (I reckon it cut the ark he'd had it so long!) but no slabber - I gave him 30% discount on my normal slabbing rates. I know it's not good business sense, but it was great to see this old fella with his mill and the differences between his and mine over the years and I figure I got the job because he was so happy with his Lucas he didn't want anything else cutting his logs.
As for deserving a new mill - well if ya wanna get technical it ain't mine until the bank manager says it is, but you can bet I'm gonna be enjoying itI love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

29th January 2010, 06:05 PM #12But seriously Bob, like I said a few weeks back - you'd hate a Lucas, there's nothing to tinker with and 'improve'.
i think y better send that down to me before you break it. jumping from a 6 to a 10 is dangerous you need to use an 8 for a wile. but dotn worrie you can borrow mine.
look foward to having a look at it next week. and i expect a pile of sawdust next to it.
