    Default help lucas wont start

hi guys, the mill wouldn't start yesterday so that was the start of my problems. i replaced the original battery, so eight years i was happy with. got the new battery home and tried it ,it wouldn't start so onto the charger. i put it in this morning but still no go. the engine will get a quick crank but will not continue to turn over hence that's why i replaced the battery. has anyone else had this problem. I'm going to hook up a car battery to see if i got a dud one in the first place but i'm wondering now if its the starter motor or something else anyway if i cant get it going i'll ring Lucas tomorrow.but meanwhile any ideas you have i would appreciate them
    regards charlsie

Might be a silly response but have you made sure that the water bottle is sitting firm down onto the machine? There is a the little switch under the water bottle that if not depressed will prevent the saw from starting, designed to prevent accidental starts when sharpening the blade. 8 years from battery!!! You must hold the record. I think i got a year out of my last one. Sorry if i've insulted you and stated the obvious.

no insult at all. the guard is down and i did check this but even when the switch isn't fully pushed down the motor will turn over but never start. mine will get the first crank over then nothing. so i'm guessing posible starter motor problem but i'll ring lucas this morning. meanwhile the dedicated slabber can have a run. cheers charlsie

i have a problem with mine not starting from time to time.

my starter motor gets packed full of sawdust and i have to take it off and clean it out.

seams just like a flat battery but its not.

i have done 3 starters in the last 3 years. scours the guts out of the windings.

i noticed teh new ones have a plastic guard.

see how ya go with that.

Sorry Charlsie, I can't help past a battery swap. I've been lucky enough with my batt's that when you chuck the acid in they don't need to be charged, they've had enough in 'em to start up straight away? sorry mate

well i rang lucas this morning and they'd seen my post after a couple of questions the first sugestion was pull the key start mounting off and clean the conections and the other electricals. while i did this i put the new battery on charge again.if this didn't work start on cleaning the starter motor.well it didn't get to that because i put it back together and flicked the key and got three revolutions of the motor. so now it's got me thinking maybe it is the battery. i leave that on charge while i start a fire in the 44 to get rid of some of the bark from the messmate logs i've been miling lately.Trying to work out how to get the starter motor out and cleaned (carl can you let me know how to do it) i thought i'd check the spark plugs. bugger me there's moisture on them. so now i drain the fuel to check for any water in it,and the filter as well, no none whatsoever. in the end i pulled the sparkplugs out again and kick the motor over, well the engine turned over no worries with a heap of water being spat out. now all i can put it down to is the battery may of died due to the colder weather of late but the water may be due to me not tightening the air filter and top cover down propery after replacing the air filter last week, anyway by 6 o'clock tonight all was well but the 500 hr service might have to come 100 hrs early

i have also had watter in the cylender on mine. gets in threw the air filter cover.

if tehre is a lot of wtter in teh cylender it will stop it from turnign over as it compresses. be careful if it fires with watter in one cylinder its likely to bust the crank.

what model do you have mate.

on mine i can unbolt the starter wit teh blade in vert and wiggle it out under the swing frame. bit of a squeeze but its doable. make sure you disonnect the battery first.

i have found its also possible to take teh flywheel off and strip the whole motor down without taking it out of the mill

thanks allan, carl i reckon thats exactly what happened. i've got the 8/27 with 400 hrs on it. i replaced the filter last week because it looked like it was wet then i run the motor and it sucked the sawdust in to the prefilter so just to be safe i replaced the paper filter. as you describe the water compressing in the cylinder and not turning over, thats what has happened. spose i better make a rain coat for it now hey. i recon allan wont have these types of problems due to the fact that he'd have Bo tucked up in cottonwool after a days work. am i close allan?
