    Default It's Just a Hobby.....

When I recently retired and announced to the wife that I was going to indulge my timber hobby, little did she know what I meant....

So I just thought I would share a few pics of some old growth red cedar that a couple of mates and I stumbled onto recently. All timber was the result of trees washed out during recent flooding. The oldest of the trees was estimated by the owner as over 200 yrs (I did ask if he planted it - he reckoned he did but had trouble remembering that far back!). The main tree is over 1.2 m across, and in some places is around 1.5m.

The root ball which we cut into 4 pieces was well over 2 metres across so we cut it into 4 pieces so we could handle it - should be some nice timber there. Note logs lined up to go onto the mill.

Some of the logs we placed onto the truck were 8.1m (cut to that length in order to fit onto the 8.3m bed.) When cut, the logs have the colour of watermelon,

and the sawdust reminds me of the good old fairy floss I used to get from the Ekka. BTW that sawdust is gracing a white cedar log which was collateral damage in the floods also.

The timber has the most amazing colour straight off the saw and I am sure will age into the most beautiful dark red cedar ever seen.

Anyway we have salvaged about all there is - around 13 cubic metres of logs - before the nasties get at them so we reckon we've done the world a favour. Now to slabbing it on the bandsaw, stacking, racking, transporting, putting it across the slabmaster.... Aaaaah - It's just a hobby!! But lots of fun!

Cheers and hope you enjoy the pics.

Very nice indeed...everything about Red Cedar is exciting, just a pity it is so soft, as this limits its use...great to see this old fellow was salvaged,as there aren't that many wild grown giants left..good stuff MM

Great work Clive. Good to see you're enjoying your retirement. I hate to think how many of these beauties get wasted one way or another. That color is stunning, a real treasure.

Just curious, what is the process from here?

    Regards,
    Peter

Hi Peter - with this amount of timber we will have to sell most of it, but will keep some for our own use. You can see my post in Members Businesses and Services section. We will also be making a dining table for the wife of the owner. Cheers Clive

    Well done

I am so envious of having cranes and trucks to move it all about, all I have is a decent cant hook, 6x4, a trailer and some dodgy knees

    Thumbs up

That's not Red Cedar!! It's a deformed Beetroot!!

Spectacular and all the better for being a "save"as it were.

Thanks everyone - yes a great find and we spent 8 hours today slabbing another 6 of the logs. Made plenty of red sawdust and put another heap of timber on the racks. Better than being in an office!!
