What on earth is good hoop? I never seen any good hoop pine, though, it is better than radiata.

The retail price for sleepers isn't worth it really. But when you're desperate..

hoop pine is great timber 1000 times better than radiata or slash. great furniture timber, lots of things are made and have been made from hoop.

its especialy nice in big old logs when u get greens greays and brown/reds.

Well a pine 2.4m sleeper is worth $13.20, while a hardwood 2.4m sleeper is worth $17.42 and F14 200x50 is about that per metre (I think). The same amount of work goes into each one but the profit margin varies alot.
For the amount of work, $13.20 isn't worth it

Funky that is a beater rate than a mobile milling job - works out at $550 per cube of product.

I understand where you are coming from with the same amount of work to get quite large pay differences, but if you can sell all of them as sleepers as compared to only selling about 20-30 lm of F14 8x2 then ya sell sleepers hey?

Mobile milling's a different game to fixed site, we have to truck* the log to the mill, we used to have to pay rent for a site, we have to clean up all our rubbish, the boss has to deal with Worksafe rubbish, we have a bobcat and forklift to fuel and maintain etc. etc. etc. $550 just doesn't cut it.

If we could cut only Building grade timber, decking and big square posts then we'd be living the life. But we don't get the orders for that so we cut sleepers and fencing mainly.

Carl, $24?? Not even the rip off merchants in Toowoomba charge that much!

Hoop pine is all right, I think so any way, I could be interested Al. Plenty of furniture has been from it.
I understand y someone might be cutting it for garden sleepers (have to keep mill going)but I still shake my head, Seems to be a waste, when we have a plentiful supply of something we seem to value it less.... Best I stop there or I'll start a rant
