To Hunt and Gather
Burls burls burls
Well yellow, red, black and white,
Add a little bit of moonlight,
I had fun and where was it - I show you the place and how accessible it is and how much it eats good tyres - but the rewards are there.Cheers

There is a tree on the Newl Highway in Nerandera (coming from the south, near the t-intersection just outside town) that is absolutely MADE of burls. But no room in the car coming back from a holiday, and a distinct lack of chain saw.

Reward vs Risk
Very good reward and as for the risk `s#%t happens`,as long as you are not injured it gives a reminder of how special the reward is.
Cheers

At least there were no nails or bolts in the tree TeeJay The burls look really great
Let me know when ever you want to head out again, happy for me to provide chainsaw & blades this time. I've even got the 25gal drum of Stihl chain oil.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

The trip versus the risk/cost is well and truly worth it.
The plunge cuts through the burl took between 3 to 5 minutes each with no effort and I managed to get the first three slabs to flat within plus/minus 3-4mm so that is pretty good. Not so much due to me buyt rather the saw and chain. the chain was a new one purchased from Laurie and it was a real pleasure to use (thanks Laurie absolutely fantastic arrangement - I will use it in future for sure ). The chisels cut to 20 deg - it worked like a charm.
There were quite a few trees about that looked similar to that one you photographed DavidG - one had a goanna up it
Many of the nicest burls wer in big trees overhanging steep banks and waterholes - one enormoous tree had about 30 burls on it and at the top an eagle or hawks nest - looked great.
I grabbed three medium sized burls to hollow out with grinder for platters and three smaller burls to play with on the lathe.
I also grabbed a post with many holes in it from fencing - I removed the previous campers decorations and then tried to winch this thing out with a 1.6t winch to an adjoining tree - it barely moved - eventually I chainsawed it below ground level - wow was it a hard bit of timber - a post that was well aged many decades. Brought it home and then found under a portion of it several million whiteants - i sprayed it real wet and wrapped it in black plastic to swelter in the sun. This post is to become a couple of bedside lamps once I get to it with the lathe and tools.Cheers
