    Default insurance for millers ?

i've just recently purchased a new log splitter and had a brainwave to hire the thing out.pretty easy i thought the hire agreement cost me a small fortune to get written up but the next thing is insurance. i'm just wondering who has got insurance for their mill and other machines and if you found it easy to do? so far the few companies i've contacted are at a loss to understand what a portable sawmill is let alone what it entails so the quotes are a bit extreme considering the reasonably small income it produces (for me) just wondering if anyone has found a company that deals with us smaller size millers?

dj i bought the super axe ws400 cost me $9100 and saw it at the seymour show for $8250 (show special) cant fault the machine but the company that make it don't hold a candle to lucas for back up. i rang the makers to enquire about a few things a month after i bought it and got the feeling that my questions were annoying to say the least.grouse machine though carl i'll google fitzpatrick and co, if they dont come up i'll pm you for details if that's ok

thanks allan, i'll get onto them this morning. also i found a mob that service the hire and rental industry, i'll try the local mob that service the farm community around here.this might sound mad, but has anyone thought of hiring out their mill without an operator? allan since youv'e upgraded couldn't you put the slabbing attachtment on the small mill and let that out? to everyone who thinks this would be sheer madness, yes i know your'e thinking minefield of public liabilty issues and all the rest but with some training it wouldn't be that impossible. the swingsaw is a total different kettle of fish. since i'm jumping through hoops just to hire out a log splitter all the other machinery i have is getting a look over as well.anyway just some of my thoughts regards PS i'm off fishing to bemm river for the week end so wont be back till sunday arvo cheers charlsie

Charlsie, a long while back, when I was a bit new and trying different ways to drum up trade, I approached our local hire mob regarding hiring the mill out, but with an operator. I know you are thinking huh? How is that different? but I'd be sub-contracting to the hire joint, they wouldn't have to maintain or repair the machine, basically I'd operate on a 'daily' rate' and the hire joint would get a percentage of $'s - admittedly it would mean I would see less $'s, but if the mill works constantly then I figure a smaller payday more often equates to a bigger income for the year.

As for dry hire of the mill... I'm not comfortable with that idea, yeah sure the gear can get broken, but that can be repaired, it's the problems associated with people breaking themselves! Mind you I used my Lucas right out of the box for 6 years now without having someone stand with me doing any OJT???

Maybe I could sell the mill to the hire joint, then when they hire it out, the hirer gets my number to go out for an hour (paid of course) to get them set-up and go over safety type stuff??? That might work...hmmm?
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Geese that is a rough bit of luck, was it 'official' hiring or letting mates 'hire' it?

if i lend something it comes back in the same or better condition as when i lent it or there will be consequences.

its also good when someone borrows something wile your not home and forgets to return it. then it turns up a year latter after you have bought a replacement.

That's the way it should be, I just won't borrow other peoples gear - you just never know when it is about to bugger up and me being me, I've paid for repairs and still don't own the machine.

Yeah that's a great one, one day when checking on a neighbours building progress, realised he had borrowed my friggin chainsaw and wouldn't you know, the bloody thing ran like a hairy goats ar$# after that for about 3 months until I found out there must have been old fuel with a heap of condensation/water in it - only after buying a new spark plug an air filter, plus spending a heap of time trying to figure out what the problem was

lent my chainsaw to bloke over the hill. and i had to fish it out from under a log. tree fell back so he dropped chainsaw and ran.

new muffler, new handle, new bar, broke all the cowling.

lent trailer to other neighbor and it came back less 1 tail board.

spreader bar for tractor came back in 4 pieces.

borrowed an air compressor came out of back of ute and smashed intake, till work ok but i replaced it with a new one and kept the old one. borrowed box of drills snapped 3 of them (sheared off by drill press) so i replaced it with a new set. thats what i expect from others. but it don't work like that.

the way i see it i don't have any mates when i'm hiring stuff out. as for people borrowing stuff i tend to do the job for them (mates) but the reason i'm getting insurance is so i can claim for damage done. so far the solicitors fees have cost a bit but if you read the details i'll be charging an insurance fee and holding a deposit via credit card or the equivilant ($34.00 per month for the mobile eftpos reader) so if damage is done i have some recourse. i rang fitzpatricks on friday and they're putting a quote together but it looks like i'm better to go through the proper hire and rental insurance company because it's their forte'. after all that i only expect people to treat my stuff like i would treat a hire piece of equipment. and the idea of that is make the thing work as hard as possible because i'm paying good money for it. the part about the angle grinder worries me though. lights, guards and everything else is just par for the course i suppose.

The grinder would worry me to if I where hiring gear out

I'm like you Charlsie, I tend to go and do the job rather than hire my gear.
