Default need some ironbark wharf timber milled in melbourne

hi i have just acquired 6 x ironbark timber posts. these are 300 x 300mm square. 2 are 4 metres long and the other 4 are 6 metres long. they are from a sydney pier so very old and hard

i would like to have the 4 longer ones into 55mm x 300mm x 3 metres (for taxble making). the other 2 shorter ones, i would like to take these down to 250 x 250 (ie 25mm from all 4 sides) and use these as feature posts for a verandah

anyone know a sawmill that can do this in melbourne? i would deliver on a crane truck

    thanks
    andrew

Also do you think if i Cut the posts down to 55 x 250 planks they would be stable or likely to bow and cup. Its ironbark and very old, but ive heard timber can still bow when resawn even afte being for so long

If so i will just use them all as posts and clean them up to 250 x 250 and beams at 125 x 250

also i spoke to the mill today and they said that ironbark that old would be fine once cut up (ie if i get it cut into boards say 50mm thick it wont cup etc as it has already been through its movement years ago)

They are probably referring to the fact that it will be dry and there will not be much movement. However if a log has growth stress (normally most prevalent in small logs) it will always be there, even fifty years later.

Having said that, your logs do not look very long so it probably won't be an issue and they can be straightened on a jointer. I've just re-read your post and I see they are indeed long, but I doubt you are making tables that size so I would expect you will still get useful timber from them.

The metal hardware is an issue, but possibly the mill has their own metal detection gear. Also large bolts/spikes are easier to detect than medium size nails that have broken off deep in the timber.

Probably look at driving the nails out with punches or even just some mild steel rod depending on the size of the fasteners.
