Red face Ive finally done it

Its been just over a year since I first started a thread here about getting into milling some timber and Ive just bought myself a brand new 395xp. The 460 ranchers gone, got stolen by some low life from my shed this year. Anyway im going in on Saturday to checkout the Westford mill and after breaking in the new saw ill hopefully get to have a go at some milling, probably start with a small straight marri log.

Nice, sounds like you're set. We're on 5 acres im just hoping to mill a few trees that need to come down and hopefully score the odd log from others but we will see what happens. My main concern is I wont be able to find many logs to do after the first few.

Not much room for logs at all really its all regrowth forest. Keep hoping this gigantic sheoke blows over must be a metre in diameter unfortunately it branches into two around 1.5 - 2m up lot of wood in the two branches aswell though

The Westford mill is very useful,it will allow you to mill in places ,conventional mills couldn't,because of it's portability..that can open up a host of possibilities...all the best ..MM

Well the ignition switch failed on my saw yesterday with only 15 mins of use on the saw so far. Guess it happens atleast the I was able to choke it to shut it down.

Got a mate round today and milled our first slabs, just a small old marri thats been down for 25yrs +. It had been destined for firewood but surprisingly we have got three good 2" thick slabs out of it so far. Didnt have rip chain yet so usrd standard semi chisel only a 18 " wide cut did it real easy very smooth finish didn't have to force the cut. Ill try get some pics up soon, and cheers to bobl for the tips such as set it up down hill.

    Pics. yes please.

Kill switch failure could just be a bit of sawdust.

Be careful using the choke to stop the saw. Repeated use can damage vacuum lines or mess with the crankcase pressure, especially on an old saw where the lines may be brittle. Not so bad on a new saw.

It's a shame you've got a Husky - I have two big mount Stihl bars (30 and 36") I'm not using that would be going real cheap.

You do realize that with a 30" you will be limited to a 24" cut on your mill?

If I was you I would go straight to a 42" bar as this is about the biggest a 395 will be able to use comfortably. I cut everything between 18" and 39" with the 42" bar and under 18" I use the 441 with a 25" bar.
