The James Anderson Experience 2012
The Start of the 2012 milling season is about to begin for us southerners and so far we have a hefty stash and building on it.
Here are a few pics of the first week with more to follow as I get time to take them.

Hi all.
As you can see we a getting into it again, doing our best to get some nice logs.
Krunchie and Tony have been busy prepping logs on two properties, while myslf and a friend used the truck and loader to grab a very nice solid 1m round fiddleback log and 1m burl from an old fallen, half burnt log in the paddock yesterday. The old log looked grey and rotten, but when I stuck the saw into it, nothing but pure clean wood with the heart way off to one side and merino wool stlye fiddlback. Mmmm... 1/4 sawn matched sets for the taking!!
We are experimenting with a few downgrade logs for post and rail material to try a inject some cashflow back into the project, as the costs can run away a bit. That crane truck was not cheap to buy, and that big CAT loader in the back ground, not cheap to hire. Franna cranes, not cheap either. The bobcat and little tipper were cheap oldies but goodies, but hey, a bloke has got to have some toys. As I said in a thread some months ago, once you have a mill, it justifies all other purchases!
Downgrade material is not really my scene, but if anyone has an outlet for say 200 x 100 x 1800 redgum posts or similar large section material, I would be interested to know. The logs are too good for firewood, but not good enough for furniture grade timber.
Anyway, until more photos arrive, happy milling!
Cheers
James.

Fiddle back eh? Pics or it doesnt exist lol ! Heart off to one side tells me it grew on a lean so mill from the heart edge down for tension reasons. Is that what every one else believes or have you heard different?

The heart is off to one side as the 1m log is actually part of a branch running off the main barrell, which would have been about 2.5 m in diameter if it had not burnt away. I have found in these big old logs that have been down for a long time (20 plus years) there is very little tension.
Cheers
James

so this is where we are at so far with about another half dozen logs (plus some down grade) and the prickliest log I have ever seen still to come.

Good story and pix Krunchie.
Do you use the dog to steady the logs?

Dog was on loan and milling will start next week (about Thursday) all depends how stuffed I am. I just spent 6 hours debarking yellow box poles while being eaten by mozzies.

Nice one Kommandant, dont be afraid to drown logs long time down with water either.
