    Default Jarrah coffee tables

    Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen
I have been flat out milling, carving, turning and teaching, in between family and work stuff.

Approximately 5 weeks ago a mate asked to keep an eye for a Jarrah log which might be suitable to cut slabs for coffee tables. I had been asked by a lady to cut up a tree, so grabbed a section and took it home.

Today we got the chance to mill it up. Myself, the mill owner and my good mate John Scarfe.

The weapon of choice is the Stihl 660 fitted with a semi chisel chain, 36 inch bar, and the mill is a $140 eBay special, Parkland brand mill.

The log had a small pipe in it, so we cut out the 6 inch heart and got 6 slabs approximately 50mm thick. I also cut some blanks for turning from the waste wood.

Not a bad mornings work. I guess now that the heat may be upon us that is the last of the milling, maybe......

    Sincerely
    Willy

Great colour there Willi and some nice looking slabs.

But I hate seeing guys on their knees grovelling around in the sawdust like that when they're milling.
It's not like it's that big a log and the 10 minutes that it takes to get the log up onto a couple of stumps or gluts is well worth the trouble.
When the log is up up at thigh height you don't have to use your arms much at all because you can lean on the saw wrap handles with your leg.
Makes a big difference to an operators shoulders and arms at the end of the day.

Better still, slope the log a bit and there's zero pushing required.

    Yes, yes!!!!
I tried to tell them that.
The miller is a young fellow, his back is good, he has perfect hearing, doesn't need glasses and has no prothestic limbs!!!!! He doesn't need to mill like us old men
I also tried to tell him about remote throttle controls, even cable ties, aux oilers and lifting the end of the log with a bush jack, bot NO, he knows better.
    Cheers
    Willy

The 'blood, sweat and tears' way - but, fortunately, this time, only the sweat required. A lovely piece of timber ... Oh, to be young again (but not as stupid as I was)!
