Idea is good but I'd be concerned about vibrations affecting accuracy of the laser
Cheers

To get a laser beam you can see in day light has to be very strong for you to see it on the log .
We had a look into it about 12 months ago and we found that the light would be to strong for your eyes so we scraped that idea

You mean something like the Lufkin Multi line Laser Level. I was checking it out in a sale catelogue at the weekend with something similar in mind. My saw is operated from one end and it is sometimes difficult to judge where your cut will finish up. At $295 it's a bit expensive but would probably save time in sighting and might prevent the occasional stuff up. (If only I had taken that first cut just a little higher...)
Cheers

About 4-5 months ago I wanted to fit a laser level for the vertical cut.Normally for the first cut, I have the blade vert and run it down the face of the log before doing the next drop to set it up in position for the first cut. I figured with a laser level mounted on top of the blade guard, you could do this without walking the blade up and down the log - save a bit of time, especially over a few days of milling. Also I had a level sitting around doing nothing
I found the problem like Dudley said, level wasn't bright enough to see it, good enough for a really nice leafy, shady spot, but I'm limited on carrying capacity on my truck so hauling a tree around with me for shade isn't a possibility
So I too have scrap'd itLast edited by Sigidi; 20th November 2008 at 02:59 PM. Reason: speelling :)

We have the same problem with "laser sights" on firearms, not bright enough on a sunny day and when it's dark, how do you see where to point the darn thing?
I have been told that GREEN lasers show up better in sunlight. Only problem is, I havn't seen any advertised by our wholesalers and in NSW high-power lasers need a Police Comissioner's Permit to buy and/or posess. The idea is good, it's just getting the right hardware to do the job.

Not a laser but it does save some time. Thats the blue mark on the plastic sheeting indicating where the blade cuts.

Inter I have something like this too on my plastic guard sheet thingo. Nowhere near as snazzy as yours, mine is just a spot repetitive use has worn the edge of the sheet, if you don't know, you couldn't see it, but I know where it is.
Hey, it'd be something from Lucas which you'd think could be easy to include... whadya reckon Lucas folkes?Last edited by Sigidi; 22nd November 2008 at 01:41 AM. Reason: a bit of issue with my speelling

Hilti have a line laser that's pretty good. it's self 'leveling' to a point but you can leave it locked off. They have also designed a air of red glasses that show up the red laser beam in bright daylight. Not sure of how that works exactly but... might be worth a try. Oh and just one other quick comment, they're expensive....
Just had a look on their website and you can buy the glasses seperatly. still don't know pricesLast edited by Mully; 26th June 2009 at 04:11 PM. Reason: You can buy the glasses seperatly.
